This Planet Sucks - Flash Fiction

"We were lied to," the alien said as he took a step out of his ship. "where is that beautiful blue we were promised by our research team?"

"I see a lot of brown," another alien said as he looked at a map of the planet.

"And it's hot... I don't want to invade somewhere that is so hot."

The alien in the ship continued to look at the map in front of him. It was an overview of the planet labelled Earth. There was vast oceans and lush green forests according to their findings. But none of that was in sight.

"Maybe... maybe we have the wrong planet?"

The alien took a step back into the ship. He wiped the sand from his shoes. "No, this is Earth... I don't get it... we looked at this planet through our scopes and we saw a lot of colour."

"They must use holograms to disquise themselves?"

"Why? It's just sand... who would want to protect sand."

The alien took a seat and pressed a few buttons.

"So we are not invading?" asked the co-pilot.

"I'm not getting my shoes dirty to invade a planet of sand... I think some got in my shoe."

The pilot pressed one last button. The ship hummed. Then a stealth shield covered the ship and their view. It lifted over the sands of the Las Vegas desert before heading out of the Earth's atmosphere.

It's funny because there's a trope in sci-fi about how planets are characterized entirely as the place where the scene is set, even though we all know Earth has a multitude of climates.

An interesting observation, @inertia
