This is a street scene taken to share with all. This festival is called Thaipusam.

It is a festival celebrated by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai either in January and February. Thai is the month and Pusam is referring to a special star.

In Singapore this is a public holiday for the Hindus to celebrate. The devotees will wake up very early in the morning carrying milk as a offering to their god.

The chosen bearers will perform a Kavadi Attam also known as the "Burden Dance" during the Thaipusam festival.
These dancers need to "fast for 48 days", "cleanse thoroughly" and prepared well mentally and physically. They will shave their hair and be fit enough as they need to walk 4 kilometers after being pierced on the skin, tongue or cheeks by vel skewers. They need to carry wooden rod on their shoulders and walk as a group and followed by all the other devotees. The procession will start from a speciic temple and end 4 kilometres at another temple.

Not all countries recognize Thaipusam festival and will not grant it as a public holiday in their country. Some of you might not have seen a Kavadi in procession, so this photo will be an eye opener of how a Kavadi look like.

I hope this post has been infotmative and you enjoy reading it.
