How to Reduce Stretch Marks

The largest organ in the body is the skin, which can contract and expand when needed. Although the skin is strong and elastic if the supporting/connective tissues are stretched too quickly or too far they can be damaged and lead to the formation of stretch marks.

Stretch marks are colored streaks or lines that appear on the skin due to the growth of weight gain. It is estimated that up to 90% of pregnant women can get stretch marks. They affect people of all skin types and ages but they are no indication of a health issue.

How Stretch Marks Form

Stretch marks occur during periods of body changes and growth, such as extreme muscle-building, significant weight gain, and puberty.
As mentioned above, stretch marks are bands or lines that are caused by the over-stretching of the skin's connective tissues. This occurs when the middle layer of the skin stretches too quickly, leading to the breakage of some of its collagen fibers.
The breaking of the collagen fibers allows the underlying blood vessels to show through resulting in the telltale of purplish or red marks. Over time they slowly fade to white or silver and this color difference distinguishes how old they are.
Stretch marks are not painful but they can greatly affect an individual’s confidence and self-esteem.

Treatments for Stretch Marks

Treatments for stretch marks reduce their appearance. It is important to note that everyone’s skin is unique and what works for your friend might not work for you. That is why it is important to consult and work with a Dermatologist or a certified therapist in regards to stretch marks reduction.
The following are stretch marks treatments that many people have found success with:

Topical treatments

Topical ointments and creams are available over-the-counter while others are prescribed by doctors. When applied regularly they can lighten the tone of stretch marks but they cannot completely remove them.

Microneedling

Microneedling targets the middle layer of the skin (dermis) where the stretch marks form. It involves poking tiny needles into the skin to trigger collagen production. Increased levels of collagen and elastin promote skin regeneration resulting in improved skin appearance and reduction of stretch marks.
Several treatment sessions are needed to effectively treat stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion targets the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) and works by stimulating the skin to tighten the elastin and collagen. It involves spraying tiny exfoliating crystals onto the treatment area or rubbing a special tipped wand over the area. A wand-like device is used to gently remove the crystals along with the dead skin from the epidermis.
The skin may feel tight and dry after the procedure along with some redness. Several microdermabrasion sessions are required to improve the appearance of the stretch marks.

Laser therapy

Laser therapy improves the appearance of stretch marks by penetrating the skin and triggering regeneration. This treatment stimulates melanin production in the treatment area and the tissues around the area to heal at a faster rate. Activating pigment cells in the skin causes the stretch marks to blend in with your normal skin.
More than one session is required for the results to be noticeable.

Cosmetic Surgery

This can involve thigh lift, arm lift, tummy tuck, and other similar procedures. It works by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining skin and tissue.
Cosmetic Surgery permanently removes stretch marks but only works on areas that have sagging skin.
It is important to understand that there is a possibility that your stretch marks may not disappear completely. That is why you should work with a Dermatologist or a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who will answer all your questions correctly and help you with your concerns.
