A stroke is a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain that suddenly interrupts or reduces the blood supply to the brain. The brain then cannot receive enough oxygen or nutrients, and brain cells begin to damage. This condition occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or rupture of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Without blood, the brain will not get oxygen and nutrients, so cells in some areas of the brain will die. Stroke can be proven by imaging or pathological examination, and can result in permanent disability or death if not treated immediately.
