Japanese scientists uncover a crater on the surface of the Moon. According to them the crater could be the second home for human colonies in the future. The length of the crater is 50 kilometers with a gap width of 1000 meters. The crater has a shape like a lava tube making it similar to a cave.
The Japan Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed that the cave was discovered by the Japanese Selenologi and Teknik (SELENE) explorers using a radar system.
According to Japanese scientists, a niche that lies beneath the area of the volcanic dome, known as the Marius Hill, was probably made by volcanic activity approximately 3.5 billion years ago. "We already know about the location that is considered a lava tube ... but their whereabouts have not been confirmed until now," said JAXA senior researcher Junichi Haruyama, quoted by Time, Friday (20/10/2017).
According to The Guardian's report, the cave has been proposed as a potential candidate for the next month's exploration base or for human colonies. That's because their structural stability offers protection from the extreme temperatures of the Moon and the cosmic radiation that envelopes its surface.
As is known, the Moon's temperature can reach 224 ° F during the day, and becomes -153 ° C at night. The discovery comes as many countries step up their mission plans to the Moon in the next few years, including US-Russia and China-Europe cooperation to build a colony base on the Moon.
Japan is targeting a landing mission to the Moon by 2030, while China sets the deadline for the mission in 2036 among other ambitious space plans that include the exploration of Mars by 2020. There is also competition with private parties such as Elon Musk's SpaceX announcing personal travel on 2018.
