Success is many things to many people. Depending on the individual success can be getting a promotion and a corner office or personal fulfillment. Success to some always seems out of reach, but in fact it is all around us.

Look at the great athletes of our time. Michael Phelps is an amazing athlete that is being talked about constantly. Not only because of his amazing feat at the Beijing Olympics, but also for his amazing work ethic.

Top executives and top athletes all have one thing in common. A burning desire to see their goals achieved. Desire is another topic for another day, today we are going to focus on defining success.

A practical definition of success is critical to your chances of achieving you idea of success. The reason a practical definition is so critical is because you have to be realistic with yourself from the start. Now that is not to say don’t shoot for the moon, but just don’t do it at high noon.

My definition of success:

Anyone is a success if they are working towards a worthy goal

This is a simple, but profound definition because it lets you take charge and decide for yourself what you deem a success. Now that we have a concrete definition of success from one of the masters of personal achievement we need to decide on what we need to do in order to make that goal a reality.

This leads us to our next point.

In order to maximize your chances for success you must do three things:

• Decide upon a specific goal

• Write that goal down and look at it twice daily

• Create a plan to reach that goal

Deciding upon a specific goal does several things to help you achieving that goal. First it narrows your focus. If you are constantly bouncing from goal to goal it will be impossible for you to focus enough energy on your goals to attain them.

Once you have your goal in mind, you must begin at once to put together a plan for achieving it. To create a plan do the following:

Think about all of the major milestones you must reach before you reach your goal. Keep these just broad enough so when you look at them you can grasp the idea of a mental pathway to your goal

After you have your major milestones listed begin thinking of the steps you need to take in order to get from milestone to milestone. If might need to enlist the help of other more specialized individuals to make sure you don’t miss a step.

Once you have your pathway constructed you need to step up a way to check your progress. A simple and effective way to do this by simply listing your goals on Post It Notes in the order you need to complete them. As you complete your stepping stones you take the Post It off and throw it away.
