How can I watch the Summer Olympics on NOS abroad?

Would you like to watch the Summer Olympics online? Are you going to cheer for the contestants from the Netherlands? Maybe you have a Dutch passport, but you currently live in Thailand, or on the riviera of Spain? What can you do if you want to watch the Summer Olympics online, not on RTVE in Spain (if you are in Spain) or on BBC in the UK (if you are in the UK), but on NOS in the Netherlands?

We all know that the best way to watch a sports event is to watch it with commentators speaking your own mother tongue, and cheering for the same competitors as we do. That is why it is natural for Dutch people to want to watch the Summer Olympics on Dutch TV, even though they live elsewhere in the world.

The only challenge is that the broadcaster of the Summer Olympics in the Netherlands, NOS, is blocking their live streams to people outside the Netherlands. They do not only block their live streams but also all the other programs available on their website. This is because they are only allowed to show these programs to viewers in the Netherlands, and not to people outside the Netherlands.

But, what can you do if you are desperate to watch the Summer Olympics online on NOS, even though you live elsewhere in Europe, or in Africa, Asia, America, or in Oceania? It is actually quite easy!

How to watch the Summer Olympics on NOS abroad!

The first thing you need in order to watch NOS abroad is to create a free account at the website. You will most likely see a screen looking something like this the first time you try to stream content on npostart.nl.

If you already have an account, log in. If not, create a brand new and free account.

You do not need an NPO Plus account to watch the Summer Olympics, so there is no need to pay extra for such a feature. Now you have to go and find the live stream of NOS. But, if you are outside the Netherlands, you will probably see an error message looking something like one of these.

Dit program mag niet bekeken worden vanaf jouw locatie.

Vanwege uitzendrechten is het niet mogelijk dom deze uitzending buiten Nederland te bekijken.jpg

Both these error messages will tell you that you are unable to watch the Summer Olympics and other content on NOS online because you are outside the Netherlands. What can you do about it?

The easy solution!

It is quite easy to fix this. You will have to make the website of NOS believe that you are located in the Netherlands. If you use a VPN, you can easily get a Dutch IP address, which means that all websites will believe that you are located in the Netherlands. But, there is a problem. NOS (NPO) is blocking 98% of all VPN providers. So, it isn't enough to purchase any VPN subscription or to look for a free VPN solution. You have to use a VPN that is actually giving you access to NOS abroad.

Based on my tests, there are currently TWO VPN providers that will help you watch the Summer Olympics (and other content) on NOS/NPO online outside the Netherlands, and those are ExpressVPN and SurfsharkVPN.

You can visit the websites of both VPN providers by clicking the links above. You do not have to worry, because if you try one of them but do not like it, then you are protected by their 30-day money-back guarantee. So, if you cannot make it work, or if you don't like it, ask for a refund, and you will get your money back.

What do to now?

  • Purchase a VPN subscription to either SurfsharkVPN or ExpressVPN.

Use the links above, as they will give you big discounts on both providers. If you purchase a 12-months plan with ExpressVPN, you will get three additional months for free. If you purchase a 12-month plan with SurfsharkVPN, you will get 12 additional months for free.

  • Download the VPN application to your computer, smart TV, telephone, or tablet.
Both Surfshark and ExpressVPN have applications available for all the different big platforms. As a result, you can easily install their application on your Android device, on your iPhone/iPad, on your Windows computer, on your Macintosh, and even on your Linux computer. They also have applications for Android TV, Fire TV, and more.

  • Run the application and connect to a server in the Netherlands.
This is the very easy part. Open the VPN application and look for a server in the Netherlands. Connect to the server, and within a few seconds, you will have a Dutch IP address.

  • Restart your browser and visit npostart.nl.
You are now ready to watch the Summer Olympics on NOS outside the Netherlands. You should no longer see the different error messages, but instead, you can watch the live streams from the Olympics and cheer for the Dutch contestants. Isn't that just beautiful?

What to do while waiting for your favorite event?

Do you have some time off? Are you waiting for a football match, or maybe a basketball match during the Olympics? If you have bought a VPN subscription, you have plenty of opportunities. You can use both ExpressVPN and Surfshark to watch content on TV networks all around the world. In other words, you can watch content on NBC in the USA, on BBC in the UK, on ZRD in Germany, on SVT in Sweden, on RAI in Italy, on RTVE in Spain, and so much more.

You can also both services to unblock streaming services such as PeacockTV, Hulu, Paramount+, Disney+, HBO Max, and so much more.

A few more words about the Summer Olympics...

The Summer Olympics were supposed to be arranged in Tokyo between July 24th and August 9th in 2020. Due to COVID, the event was postponed, and will now be held between July 23rd and August 8th in 2021. There will be a few football matches and basketball matches played on July 21st and July 22nd, but the opening ceremony will only be held on July 23rd.

The Netherlands will play against Zambia in their first football match during the Summer Olympics on July 22nd at the Miyagi Stadium in Tokyo. This is going to be a fantastic match, and considering that the Netherlands is one of the big outsiders in the tournament, this is a match they definitely should win! Let us cheer for them together, something that is even more important now, considering that foreigners are not allowed to be present at the stadiums to cheer for the teams and contestants during the Summer Olympics (due to COVID restrictions).

I hope these instructions have helped you. If you have any further questions, please write a comment and I will do my best to help!
