It’s getting hot, the sun is out, put on some sun screen….. NOT!

Living on a homestead requires lots of hard work and the majority of that work happens outside, we have a huge garden that feeds not only us but the surplus is sold to the surrounding communities. We raise chickens for the meat and the eggs and we pasture cattle, all of this happens outside and we would not have it any other way!

For those not familiar with south central Kentucky, it’s sunny and between 85 and 105 degrees for about 8 months a year and it’s very muggy. You are probably thinking why would someone live there it sounds crazy, well if you figure in that southern breeze, its perfect weather. There is something about that cool breeze that keeps everything in check.  Find a hammock in the shade with the cool breeze and you are in paradise!

Living on a homestead and practicing permaculture techniques, we stay as far away as possible from chemicals, we don’t use them in our food production, our animals have never seen an antibiotic or pesticide. We rarely eat processed food, we try to stay as pure as possible with our food, i.e. not added iron or bleaching of our flour, no iodine in our salt, no chemicals in our food. Did you know that eggs you buy in the store have been radiated to kill off anything that might get the behemoth corporations sued? Then, of course, you are consuming the radiation, that’s poison versus a one in a million chance you might get an upset stomach……. I digress back to the sun!

I was reading an article post by the Permaculture Research Institute that reviewed sunscreen, now I am a fair-skinned Norwegian and my wife is of German and Irish decent, so we burn quickly and in the past, we used a lot of sun screen. Well now the dirty little secret is out, guess what, sun screen has been shown to cause cancer. The study suggests that not using sun screen at all is better for you than using it. Of course, the chemical industry tells you that placing petroleum products on your body is completely safe, you know, because it comes out of the ground! With our fair skin, I believe we need to do something, so we will be looking at other non-toxic ways to protect ourselves. (we may just need to keep our clothes on, lol….)
