Clip Studio Paint, Attempt No. 6

in superheroine •  6 years ago

Okay, a couple of drawings of Phantom Lady here. The first one is an image that I created in paint.net and posted to Steemit a little over a week ago.

At the time I posted it, I complained about the top she was wearing and made a sacred vow that if I ever launch this Real Superheroines webcomic, I would change that top. While true to the original character, it is just weird to draw and is hard to make look like it is actually falling over skin. So I did a web search of some strapped tops and found a design that was a little more form fitting and equally revealing that I think would be a better fit.

So I took just the black ink layer, converted it to a blue layer then redrew the character with the new top. This time though I used Clip Studio Paint.phantomlady contrast.png

So in addition to the fashion upgrade, you can see the difference in the software programs. Some of the difference is in the technique that I used. With paint.net, since making consistent, smooth lines was a struggle for me, I was experimenting with the first image of using blacks only for the outline of each section of color, and tried to create 3-dimensionality strictly with shades of color. Almost like working with pastels in a coloring book. The newer image has much cleaner lines, so I went with a more comic-style. If you look closely I am still experimenting in some areas with crosshatching and using darker watercolors for shade.

I was raving previously about the brush control and how much better it is in CSP. Here's a closer look so that you can see the difference in line quality. The one with the violet aura (because I accidentally created that on the ink layer) is from CSP. In addition to looking more natural it was actually quicker and easier to draw.

Ah, speaking of costumes. Her old top only looked right when looking straight at her. Which is terrible if you want to actually use her as a character in a comic where she may actually have to turn 10 degrees. So after deciding to alter her halter (heh), I just did a quick web search for "dynamic female poses" and tried to make sure I was comfortable with drawing her top in multiple angles and positions. Here's a sample, this one was still from paint.net.

And, one last look at Phantom Lady for a while. This one was created in CSP, using a 3-d model as a base. Fairly simple pose and made sure to give her her black light generator. Really crudely done background.

Also with a process gif. Now I really need to get some sleep.
