Idolatry has its origin in the superstition of man, as explained in the book of Wisdom written by King Solomon; and superstition is linked to magical thinking, this way of thinking consists of attributing a magical power or a fantastic power to things, the numbers or the words. Numbers or words have no greater value than what we want to give them, bad or good luck are the product of human fantasy, we are the creators of our destiny through our effort. Many times people use superstition to avoid recognizing their terrible mistakes, and that people reap what they sow, superstition is a way of blaming the other, of inventing enemies where they are not.
Superstition and magical thinking are things that originate in the most primitive times of man according to the Bible, and are also closely linked to perversion, to our inability to perceive God and his perfect wisdom with intelligence; who is filled with the spirit of God can not surrender to these things because God gives his perfect knowledge of how the universe works.
Even today we see how many politicians wear amulets to protect themselves from negative emotions, for example, the famous red ribbon in the form of a bracelet against envy.
The book of wisdom tells us with a brief and simple case, of how superstition and human passions are the foundation of the false gods:
"For the idea of making idols was the beginning of fornication,
and the invention of them was the corruption of life;
for they did not exist from the beginning,
nor will they last forever.
For through human vanity they entered the world,
and therefore their speedy end has been planned.
For a father, consumed with grief at an untimely bereavement,
made an image of his child, who had been suddenly taken from him;
he now honored as a god what was once a dead human being,
and handed on to his dependents secret rites and initiations.
Then the ungodly custom, grown strong with time, was kept as a law,
and at the command of monarchs carved images were worshiped" Wisdom 14:12-16.
