Bug Out Bits: Bugging out is not camping # 7

in survival •  6 years ago

So, what’s the difference between bugging out, camping, and long distance hiking? Lets take a look inside Squirrel Bait’s mind. I warn you, it can be a scary place. Bugging out is a treacherous, scary, and difficult thing to do!

Fire. Unlike camping and hiking, there’s no time to build one as you must keep moving. This makes food prep and water purification extremely difficult. Expect thirst and hunger as a regular companion. A fire will give away your presence so a cold dark night awaits you.

Speaking of fire, there will be no emergency response to fires. There will be no emergency response to just about everything. Keep this in mind. Fire and smoke should be added to the list of threat. Paramedics, firefighters, police officers, etc are all in the same boat you’re in. They are trying to save their own families.

Build a tall pit around your fire, like a foot or more to hide the light.
You could also do an earthen rocket stove, build it right into the bank of a river. Rivers hide your noise too.
Small fires should be okayish. They all still put off smoke. You can carry fire in a mushroom( hang on I will try to find a picture and link )
Here is a link : https://www.primalsurvivor.net/tinder-fungus-firestarter/
I couldn’t find one picture I likes, but there are several that look the same as in the link that look like the one I’m thinking of.
If you are bugging out in the winter you will have to have a heat source or you will be burning more cals then you can eat.
It all depends on the senerio, season and threats.

Absolutely!!!! Thanks for those comments 🍺There are many things you can do once you are at a safe location just not while you are on the way there (in general). Can't spend the time and energy and risk it until you're really out in a secluded area. Winter nights are different (risk vs benefit). Like you say, it does so much depend on the exact situation someone finds themselves in. How far they have to go on foot and where they are.

Funny you mention a river and sound. I have a video I'm finishing up about sound and stealth and I feature rapids in a small river to talk about exactly that. 🌞More of using your environment to your advantage. I plan on doing a how to stay warm in the woods video being I'm originally from upstate NY this winter. Hey, you should do an article or video on it!!! Being in Alaska, you too have experience with not just cold but that kill ya cold.

Thanks for providing the mushroom link for everyone. These are available just about everywhere in the woods in the United States. Handy dandy.

My husband tried to share winter survival skills but there was very little interest. He went through the militaries winter survival testing 3 or 4 times. I think he is an instructor too 🤔 Anyways the military survival skills corse is -60°F and sleeping in a snow cave type stuff.

Not a ton of interest in the survival content, that's true. As our society continues to crumble, more people will be interested and need the info.

True, but by then it will be to late. People need to know now, even if they don’t use it in this life time they can pass it on to their kids.
The temps are dropping at night here. We are in the low forties at night now. I hope the hubby steps up his game and teaches the kids more survival skills.
Winter is Coming and so is GoT🤞

Yeah I bet you have a winter prep routine! Brrrrr

All we can do it put it all out there. ❤️
