In this video, I present a food item from Nature's Market you may not be familiar with. I've never seen Honey Locust pods offered in a supermarket but they are indeed edible. This is something to keep in mind in the event you find yourself in a survival situation.

I sometimes rest by a small grouping of Black Locust (I think) during my treks outdoors...Never heard of eating Honey Locust beans, but remember hearing that we can roast, grind and brew a coffee like beverage from them.
I'm not gonna try it though...When I was a kid about 178 years ago, one of my uncles who took me to the park told me 'never' to eat those things that I found laying on the grass...they'll kill ya...
Maybe he thought they were Castor beans??? I don't know.

Hiya there angryman! Kentucky Coffee tree pods(see that video) look similar to the Black Locust pods and they are toxic. Growing up we knew the Honey Locust trees as the Snake Trees due to the very long "snakes" hanging down. Good example of why proper identification is so important.

I've never heard of these before.
In the past I will study the flora and fauna of the environment in which i am deploying to.
Great info snippet and well highlighted...
People have to realise that every resource in a survival or SHTF environment should be considered.

Thanks! I'm all about making coffee when SHTF. LOL! Look at the trunk. That will tell you which one you have. If you have clusters of thorns on smooth bark , then you have honey locusts. If it has ropey patterned bark, then you have black locust. If it's neither then you have something else. Dad's the tree expert ( has a degree in Forestry). I just know how to tell the two locust trees apart. Oh, and now the Kentucky Coffee tree thanks to Dad. It has hanging pods too, remember? That's a completely different critter. You might have something completely different than all of these in Texas. You could always go snack on it and let me know you you feel. LMAO. 😎

haha! yeah I'll go eat some of those things. Well we have one tree along our county road that has the long black pods and they cover the road every year but I don't know what the trunk looks like, the honey locust with the thorns is the good one to eat right?
