A new meta-study of the results of over 500 previous studies on over 100,000 people has been published in the influential medical journal Lancet. It confirms the position of many experts in neurology and psychiatry: antidepressants really work. According to the results of the analysis, antidepressants can be powerful tools in the fight against depression , which remains one of the leading causes of suicide in the world. The panel of 18 experts from UK and European physicians concluded that all of the 21 antidepressant drugs tested were better off with treatment of depression than with placebo controls.
At the same time, antidepressants are not expected to do miracles. With 78% of those suffering from depression, just taking antidepressantdoes not eliminate the most severe symptoms of depression, such as isolation of the suffering of the society, testing of severe impulses for self-harm, or excessive self-critical attitude that affects everyday life. A small percentage of people do not respond to antidepressants at all, and this is known as the extremely difficult to overcome phenomenon of depression that is medically resistant and is one of the most difficult to overcome problems. But in those where the symptoms respond to medications, antidepressants can be a powerful weapon in a broader therapy strategy that includes group counseling, psychological help, and various types of exercise.
