Tapcoin – future of game money?

Among all the new ICO’s coming out it is becoming difficult to catch the interesting fish. But this one caught our attention! Anyone who has ever played MMO or other mobile app had the pleasure of getting to know ingame money, micro-payments and other stuff that fuels the games economy. Most of the times we have used that cash to buy stuff inside that one game.

But what happens when you go and play another game? your money is not valid there, right? That is the issue Tokencoin is set out to fix.

The idea behing Tocencoin (TTT) is pretty simple to grasp and understand, though much more complex to deliver. TTT is supposed to be your single ingame currency that you can use in number of games and not just one.

For example: You have 1000 TTT in your account. You can use and spend that TTT in Dota, Candycruch (though you shouldn’t), World of Warcraft and other games as well. You buy a sword here, a booster over there, a shiny new skin over there… All swell and dandy.

It is not difficult to see the appeal of this coin straight away and how it would revolutionize the whole ingame cash system. So, let’s have a closer look and see if it is something worth investing in.

Potential
The first questions that come to mind when thinking of potential is:

1. Why would i use this?

2. Will this improve something?

3. Would developers and companies even adapt this?

Akhem…. So me. Why would i use this and what’s in in for me. Well, putting aside the question of worth and investment, it would be really cool to have all my game cash combined. I have never even thought of game money that way, but once Tapcoin introduced this idea, it seems like something that should’ve been done ages ago! All the hours i have spent playing “Elder Scrolls” would be even better if i could have some of the achievements passed on to the next game, right?

Now the improvement part, what does this solve? in my opinion, it solves a problem of ingame cash being practically useless. As we all know most games use credit system to drive their profits. Hence, making it one way track; you want experience boost – you pay money. Tokencoin on the other hand, suggests it would be more of an ecosystem, meaning ingame credits would circulate among number of games, users and developers. This would make ingame credit to have Actual value, hence Desirable. Thus making audience more engaged in the game itself, which is goal of any game developer out there.

Which brings us to the last and very important question – Developers. Are there any substantial gains from this coin? Well yes and no. Think of it this way. If you are releasing a game, sure you’d be happy if the user base would switch will all that sweet sweet TTT cash to your game. But just as easily they can switch to another game and so on and on.

But the risks aside the potential is huge here. Especially the indie game developers find this quite exiting tool. As for big companies – it would depend on the demand and usage among players.

So to put it shortly, is there a potential for Tapcoin? Yes, huge. the idea has depth and you can spend several days thinking of the possibilities and ways you could use this. Even some of the boring games you’ve played in the past would become worth while again with TTT in it. And the key word here is WORTH.

Downside
Now let’s take a short view to the issues and some bad things of this coin. Again, let’s try to distance ourselves from standard investor point of view and have a rational though on implementation and dangers.

The for most issue i see with this is the team behind Tapcoin. They have four guys on their team and i am sure all of them are great, funny, cheerful gamers. But are they up for the task? well, i am not sure. They do not seem to have solid “big shot” names in their short intro’s and after short research, not much info on them in general. Now, don’t take this the wrong way. I personally believe they can introduce the product, but can they achieve the ultimate goal?

Second thing that comes to mind, thinking of Tapcoin is that it would be extremely hard to convince game developers to adapt it in their games. As we all know, there is already a coin that works on all games – Dollar. So to make game developers see Tapcoin as something better than the dollar is something that will take great effort.

Among the above there is also the security, Underage and game developer profitability questions that are debatable.

Investment
Now the topic that we have put aside earlier needs to be addressed. After all cash is king and money is what we all are here for, right? So let’s take a look at what we have here and is TTT a viable investment or just another bust.

So this one is hard to pin down. On one hand you have a great idea, with lots of space to evolve. On the other you have market with overwhelming competition. Not to mention the regulatory dangers here (again….underage players).

If we would want to find any tip or sense that there is any game company that is already working to implement TTT that would be a great sign of confidence. But there is none – and we were unable to find any solid evidence of this being a solid product.

Moreover, they have delayed their ICO launch date, which also indicates difficulties in development process. It was supposed to be launched in late July, though now we are informed it is delayed to Q4 2017.

That being said, it seems to be a tempting opportunity for small, symbolic investment. Something that would not burn your wallet, but would help the cause. And who knows – maybe it will skyrocket in value.
