The Culture Of Tardiness Among Indonesians

If you ever been to Indonesia and attend any appointment, never ever expect it to start on time. Last year I was having a very bad ear ache, and when I registered to the front desk at the hospital the nurse on that floor said the doctor would come around 9 am while in fact the doctor arrived an hour later and I finally met her around 15 or 20 minutes after her arrival. For me the worst one is actually the ships that sail to eastern part of Indonesia. On the ticket you'll find the schedule printed probably at 11 am while in fact the ship departs at 8 pm, people get so furious with the staff yet they still act like "take it or leave it, bitch!" because that's the only transportation option for the people.

My last unpleasant tardiness experience was last weekend. I invited my neighbor to visit a lake in center part of Bali. I've informed him on Thursday that "we'll be leaving at 9 am on Saturday from Mc Donalds at Sunset Road." Saturday morning at 8 am I mentioned it again to him when he was sitting as his front porch, and he said "Sure let's leave around 8:30". When he said that in my mind I've pictured him being ready before 8:30 and by 8:30 we'd be mounting behind the bike driver's seat. I came to knocked on his door several times, one time around 8:20, then at 8:30, then at 8:35 when he finally opened the door and this was what he said,"Oh am just done with shower, and just need to put on clothes, around 10 minutes." I felt like there was a fire inside my brain, I wish I could me the old me, the mean bitch, and then old him, "who the fuck are you putting on clothes for 10 minutes?" Instead I ordered my ride and left him. He called me around 9:25 am and sent me a text that he'd be waiting at McDonalds in Sunset Road.

I wish I'm brave enough to confront him and telling him how I don't appreciate such behavior and yet I am being a pussy by writing it down, and I am not sorry for leaving him behind. I think when people are making appointment and agreeing on a time to meet, they should respect each other's time by showing up on time.
