As we are approaching another big tax deadline, I thought I would repost the income tax timeline that I previously created. Below I have put together a brief outline on the deadlines relevant to individual filers this tax season.
January 15 - Deadline to file the final estimated payment (Form 1040-ES) for individuals.
January 31 - Deadline for businesses to provide W-2s to their employees.
January 31 - Deadline for schools to send 1098-T to students.
January 31 - Deadline for businesses to provide annual information statements to recipients of certain payments (Form 1099). Specifically, this deadline relates to payments such as dividends, interest, royalties, compensation for independent contractors, debt cancellation, prizes, and awards. For more information, refer to the General Instructions for Certain Information Returns.
February 15 - Deadline for businesses to provide annual information statements to recipients of certain payments (Form 1099). Specifically, this deadline relates to payments such as all payments reported on Form 1099-B (Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions), all payments reported on Form 1099-S (Proceeds from Real Estate Transactions), and substitute payments reported in Box 8 or gross proceeds paid to an attorney reported in Box 14 of Form 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Income).
March 15 - Deadline for partnerships and S corporations to provide K-1s to the owners. Also, an important filing deadline for businesses.
April 17 - Deadline for individuals to file their income tax return (Form 1040) or request a 6 month extension (Form 4868). The filing deadline is extended a day due to the 15th falling on a Sunday. Note that even if an extension is filed, the tax liability for the return must be paid in full by this date.
October 15 - Deadline for individuals who requested a 6 month extension (Form 4868) to file their income tax return (Form 1040).
