The purpose of this post is to establish a list of itemized deductions available to taxpayers. I hope to explore the deductions listed below in future postings. Note that in order to claim itemized deductions the aggregate amount of the itemized deductions must be in excess of the standard deduction ($6,350 single/married filing separately, $12,700 married filing jointly, and $9,350 head of household).

  1. Medical and Dental Expenses
  2. Deductible Taxes
  3. Home Mortgage Points
  4. Interest Expense
  5. Charitable Contributions
  6. Miscellaneous Expenses
  7. Business Use of Home
  8. Business Use of Car
  9. Business Travel Expenses
  10. Business Entertainment Expenses
  11. Work-Related Education Expenses
  12. Casualty, Disaster, and Theft Losses

Can we expect this list to get bigger for 2018?

It will actually get smaller. Employee reimbursed expenses, tax preparation fees and other miscellaneous deductions are going away. Itemized deductions will also be harder to claim with the expansion of the standard deduction.
