Classroom environment is one of the most significant factors influencing students’ education. In order for the learning process to be effective in schools, the environment must be conducive to learning, creating a platform for students to own space and time to interact within the learning and teaching process. Based on previous school-based experience, a few teachers have shared ideas and perspectives on the essential establishing a conducive learning environment to bring a great success for both sides, teacher and students. Mostly, it focuses on the role of teacher to take further approach. Hence, the responsibility of a teacher to point out the most suitable method to establish a conducive learning environment is crucial.
First and foremost, getting the students to cooperate is the initial step in creating a pleasant atmosphere during learning process. That could be achieved by setting out the rules and routines. Students can be out of control at certain times. Therefore, rules are existed to make them aware of the boundaries and matters that they are supposed to do. It is another method of throwing away the barrier which can disrupt the learning. Teacher should clearly define the rules and routines for activities and classes in the first place. Teachers are responsible for producing appropriate demands, giving clear instructions and being consistent as soon as they have established the ground rules to own the student’s cooperation.
Next, a positive relationship between teacher and students lead to a positive learning atmosphere. In this context of relationship, the teacher needs to take into account the needs of students, their interest and their emotional state. Students must feel safe, supported, and respected in their classrooms to encourage them to learn. It involves appreciating the pupils, recognising their strengths and believes that everyone has something important to contribute. For instance, by showing concern and taking a genuine interest in pupils personal needs as well as their background. Subsequently, positive relationship avoids teacher from discriminating student to allow active engagement from them to make sure they meet their learning needs and enjoy the learning process.
Last but not least, the results of analysing the teacher’s perspective on a conducive learning environment, I found that most of them emphasised on the physical aspect of the classroom. Every area of the classroom should hold the purpose of creating an atmosphere that encourages participation and learning. The physical aspects include the layout and arrangement of the desks or tables, the placement of items on the bulletin boards and walls, and the existence of specific areas such as reading and speaking corner. For instance, by allowing students to be clustered around in a group to focus areas for activities, choose a pleasing colour to be painted in the wall and consider the furniture and equipment you must fit into the classroom. Hence, teacher needs to come up with a well-structured classroom arrangement to employ a conducive learning environment.
Overall, classroom atmosphere is pivotal features in establishing a conducive learning environment to ensure an effective teaching and learning process to take place. Observing and experiencing a real-life classroom is undeniably a great way to widen up our vision and knowledge in the aspects of teaching. As a future educator, one needs to brush up their understanding of handling both the classroom and students in advance. In order to achieve a successful result, we must know what we are dealing with beforehand, as it will be tough if we go to the classroom totally unprepared.
