📻 My 5 Singles From The Early 70's

in teamaustralia •  6 years ago

I read about this challenge/writing prompt created by @slobberchops. Seeing as I love music, especially the music of the 70's, I thought I'd jump in too. Especially since my #hifimixtape contest this week is music from the year you were born (1973).

So here are my "Fab 5".

The Rules

  • Link FIVE singles from the 1970’s and let us know why they are memorable to you:
    One from 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974.
  • Make sure they are not too obscure, we are trying to teach the younger readers what was good, not about old ‘B-sides’.
  • State the year of release, we are trying to educate people!
  • Use the tag #seventieschallenge
  • Add a Wikipedia link to each song so the uneducated can learn a little about the song. If there isn’t one available, then choose something a little more popular.

1970

My Sweet Lord by George Harrison from his 1970 release All Things Must Pass

Possibly one of my favourite artists of all times, definitely my favourite Beatle, and definitely an album that is in my top 5. He was unfortunately sued (successfully) by some gold-digger because three notes in this song sound like three notes from an old song... seriously?!? Anyway, I'm sure you'll read more about it here.

1971

Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool, from their 1971 album Daddy Who?

Classical Australian track! Still one of the biggest, I believe. Daddy Cool was one of the early 70's "head bands" that played local festivals. Ross Wilson has gone on to a stunning solo career and still plays, albeit more prog-jazz focussed. You can read more about it here

1972

Take It Easy by The Eagles, from their 1972 debut release Eagles.

Written by Jackson Browne and Glen Frey, this track is a classic, and for some reason helps me 'take it easy'. I think possibly because I used to get stoned and throw on the Eagles and sit on my porch in the country and just absorb the fresh country air... A lot of folk are curious about how it is I love this band. I can't explain why, but I just do. It's probably about as middle of the road as I get. Read about the track here

1973

I'm The Slime by Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention from their watershed album Over-Nite Sensation.

This album is critically acclaimed, and this single (the only one from it) is political and poignant, as Zappa was known to be. Not the best track on the album IMHO, but it was the single. You can read all about what this song is about here.

1974

Love Is All by Roger Glover with Ronnie James Dio from the concept album The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast.

This was the project that Roger Glover took on after leaving Deep Purple. It was released in the UK in November 1974, and in the US in 1975. I think technically the single may also have been released in '75, however given the story behind it is linked to the entire album, I've included it here. It's one of my earliest musical (and video) memories, with ABC-TV kids programming showing the video in between shows. No wonder I grew up loving Deep Purple and Dio!!

Enjoy!
