The area in the Balkans and Pannonia populated by Serbs comprises several cultural and geographic regions. The Dinaric Zone extends from the Adriatic region in the west to the Velika Morava River in the east, and from the Sava and Danube rivers in the north to the mountain range of Prokletije in the south. The zone is divided into the mountain, Zagora and Littoral regions. The mountain region, whichis also known as Povrs or the Brda (hills) in folk terminology, includes the highest Dinaric areas and it is a natural boundary between Dalmatia and Bosnia. The Central Balkan Zone is situated in the middle of the Balkan Peninsula around the Morava and the Vardar river valleys, from the Pannonian basin in the north to the littoral of Macedonia and Thrace in the south. Within this zone, the following regions can be distinguished: northern, central and southern. Due to its historical role in the developer statehood of medieval Serbia, the central area of this zone is also called Old Serbia. The historical area populated by Serbs in the Panonian Zone roughly encompasses the area to the south of the mountain rangers of Papuk, Psunj and Pletenica, extending to the southeast towards the Sava and to the northeast, across fruska Gora, The Danube, Tisa and Tamas rivers, to the slopes of the South Carparthuns. This zone comprises the regions of Slavonia, Srems, Baranja, Backa and Banat.
