Freedom Day - 27 April 1994 to 27 April 2018 - 24 years of Democracy in South Africa - Still a long way to go.

Today is Fredom Day in South Africa. On 27 April 1994 South Africa held its first post-apartheid, democratic elections, where all South Africans, of all race groups and ethnic backgrounds could register to vote, and cast their ballots to bring South Africa into a new era of democratic governance.

The African National Congress (ANC) won that election with a vast majority of 62.9%, and the late Nelson Mandela, then President of the ANC, became the first democratically elected President of South Africa, inaugurated on 10 May 1994.

It was a turning point in South African history, which brought so much hope to so many people.

Nelson Mandela led South Africa through a turbulent time of transition, and held fast to his integrity, and spirit of reconciliation, always seeking a united South Africa. While he may have had a checkered past during his years in "The Struggle," his leadership of South Africa during his time as President cannot be faulted.

The New South Africa has not seen a leader with the integrity, reconciliatory spirit, and uniting vision, as did Nelson Mandela. No successor has even come close. South Africa has come a long way forward since 1994, but there is still an even longer way forward to travel for South Africa to truly be free of the shackles of the past.

South Africa owes a great debt to Nelson Mandela, and has an obligation to exercise their freedom to choose the right path to really achieving that untied and free South Africa which he fought to hard to realize.

With the right people in charge, anything is possible.

Mandela was a great president but unfortunately his successors were not able to keep his level as a statesman.

Yep, not even close. They're more intersted in lining their own pockets these days. Maybe Cyril will be better, but I have my doubts.

Sadly I think South Africa has started going backwards again. Some of the politics I've seen going on there is appalling. I hope they don't go down the same road Zimbabwe did.

It does seem like a one step forward, two steps back kind of patern unfortunately. The potential for South Africa to be great is there, but the government and others seem more intent on lining their own pockets, and driving the country into the ground. They're on the edge of a steep and slippery slope. I can't help but wonder how far down they'll get before there is no coming back.

I appreciate you sharing a little on South Africa. I’m not a world news person, but last check, those in charge were failing the people. I was horrified by the lack of forward planning re the recent water shortages. I was shocked by how a South African I recently met at work had little good to say politically. It’s a sad situation as far as all the reports I hear.

I’d love to visit South Africa one day, it’s a shame it doesn’t feel safe enough. :(

The water shortage in the Cape is terrible, and has been going on for a long while. They're coming ubto the rainy season now, so hopefully they get enough to fill their reserves.

South Africa is a beautiful place to visit. It's not all a war zone, and you can move around relatively easy without putting yourself in danger. Going in a group and seeing the country is still pretty safe if you go to the right places.

Some of the stories I hear are terrible, and if I visit, I want to be able to roam freely and immerse in the culture. I’ve never been a tour group person and would immediately discount destinations that forces that requirement. But I’ll consider it. It might be the only way I can visit!
