IOT Explained By A Steemian Electronics Engineer - IOTA and The Blockchain

Hi there fellow Steemians, yesterday I was on " Coinmarketcap " and saw IOTA ranked 6th and I was very surprised, many of you probably don't know about IOT, so I thought why not explain IOT to the steemit community since I spent a long time working on IOT projects in my profession as an Embedded Electronics Engineer.

IOT stands for " Internet of Things ", it's simply a system of physical things embedded with sensors, electronics and software so we can be able to monitor, manage and control them.

These connected devices can exchange information with other connected devices or with the operator, WHY use IOT ?

Think about the unlimited number of possibilities here, if IOT gets completely implemented in our society we will be living in an extremely smart world where electronic sensors will track and report every important variable in our environment and the internet will be used as a medium where all the communication will happen.

I will try to give you an example so you can see why it's a great technology.

Case :

So let's say, this is me " Achraf ", one day while i'm sleeping in my house, I had a sudden heart attack at 3 o'clock in the morning.

In a world whitout IOT I will definitely die without even having the chance or the opportunity to receive help !!

Imagine if in this case IOT was used, I will have a " heart rate sensor " on my hand ( like a watch ), it's connected to the internet, my heart rate - value is stored in a database installed on a remote server " Probably in the emergency center near me" along with thousands of heart rates ( My neighbours values LOL :) ).

Once the value is bellow a threshold an alarm will be triggered, the peeps responsible ( in the emergency center ) will know that and they will be able to save me or at least TRY to save me !!

This case for example can get more technical but this is just a general description.

These are some pulse sensors I'm already using in some of my projects :

How to make this system ?

Transferring "The heart rate " to the internet is easy, we use this component for this, it's called ESP8266 :

Making a functioning prototype can be made ( in one day ), but making a complete and user friendly product will take weeks.

As an embedded electronics engineer this is my part of the project, the software side of the project is made by SOFTWARE ENGINEERS who will write the internet related code.

I hope You loved this example.

Now let's talk about IOT and the Blockchain :

About IOTA :

I just want to mention that " coinmarketcap " has an error in the price of IOTA, the price should be in MIOTA ( mega-IOTA ) not in IOTA whic means that they increased the price by 1 million and the market cap is also wrong.

There you have it, IOTA is maybe not even in the top 100 coins.

IOT and the Blockchain :

When people talk about IOT they always talk about the problem of security.

What if somebody hacks your Data ?
What if he can take control of your own devices, let's say your car or your fridge for example ?

Blockchain_Black.jpg

The solution is : The blockchain technology, the blockchain is more secure than other mediums, I'm not going to talk about why the blockchain is more secure, maybe I will in an other post, but I think people did cover that topic in the past.

I hope you loved my post about IOT, please consider upvoting and sharing.
Love, Achraf.

Thanks for your introduction to iota!

you're welcome :)

Thanks for this simple and concise overview of IOT and IOTA. Basically the blockchain gives you consensus and security in the Internet-of-things controlled by IOTA.

Also nice that you pointed out the inaccuracy of coinmarketcap. I know that some people have been suspicious of this project because of the overblown marketcap reported.

Thank you for reading, yes thanks to the blockchain IOT will develop much faster.

cool, seems like you get into some projects like i'm interested in! is your IoT job for yourself or for a company? i really would love to build some stuff (of course you just read that in my intro haha) and IoT is super cool stuff, the barrier to entry is so low. i just don't have work space so i keep buying bits and pieces for projects that then sit on a shelf somewhere. anyway, thanks for the post and going over IOTA. good info!

Hey, for a company, enjoy your time building stuff and you're welcome
