Exocortex is a external information processing system capable of enhancing a brain’t biological cognitive processes. A single Exocortex consists of memory modules, processors, I/O devices, softwares etc that would interact with a human’s brain. An interface will be used in order to have interaction between a biological brain and electronic device. A person having huge numbers of exocortices can be considered as cyborgs. Exocortex? Exocortex is actually made of two word : “Exo”(a Greek Prefix) which means external and “Cortex”(a Latin Noun) which means bark and in our context it is used to describe the external bark like layer of brain processing high level information.
The term “Exocortex” was coined by Ben Houston in 1998 and according to him it means tightly coupled high level brain computer technologies. Just think if you can unconsciously get information from the internet and can learn what you want to learn without turning on your laptop and books. Think about the possibilities of controlling electronic appliances with your brain how cool would that be? With great uses and applications there can be great disadvantages also. With brilliant minds you can easily get hacked and the hackers may steal all of the information and credential that you have taking from bank passwords to your girlfriend’s number.
Potential Uses
Initially it was not as popular as after Charles Stross's recent publication. He described the growing awareness of brain computer interfacing. If Exocortex is reached at its full potential, it can completely transform our world by getting rid of most of the electronic devices like smartphones, bluetooth and more. With this you are directly and continually in contact with all these devices that can interact with cloud services like searching, tracking and other services. It can completely transform the military techs in terms of observing things and taking decisions. But however the project is in its early phase to know about its complete potential.
