Radar road signature – future technology which is going to make an evolution in driving

in technology •  7 years ago

Recently German Bosch engineering and electronics company is planning to use radar sensors in millions of cars to make a better driving map.
With the self-driving cars emerge in recent century the need of accurate maps is growing. They need to know which road to take from a specific point to destination, detect stop signs and road’s speed limits. These cars are using onboard sensors like LIDAR and cameras, which gives them situational awareness, and a better map would be a complement to those.

These maps should be accurate down to less than an inch. The system will use the map, GPS and onboard sensors to help the car figure out where it is.
Bosch and mapping company TomTom are working on a technology called “radar road signature” as a partnership to boost the accuracy of these maps.
Both human driven and self-driven cars will use this onboard radar sensors to map the road with more details and more accurately.
By 2020 Bosch’s cars with radar sensors could start collecting roads and map data that would be integrated into TomTom maps.
The idea is that a car manufacturer will gather, in its own cloud, the data gleaned from the radar sensors on a vehicle, and then that information will be shared with Bosch and TomTom. Then those improved maps could help guide autonomous vehicles.
Interestingly, the Bosch initiative involves using radar to look at static objects, like road signs; current radar sensors focus on moving ones, like the vehicle in front of you.

this technology is going to help drivers and keep the roads safe and maybe in future we see less fatal accidents and car crashes which takes many people lives each year.
