Self awareness does not necessarily denote consciousness. It could simply be a robot having awareness of all it's own parts and purpose. In that regard most cars are self-aware. They tell you when a door is open, low tire, etc.
Regardless, the exponential development of technology will no doubt lead us to the singularity in the next 50-100 years. Our fate at the hands of robots depends on if we continue to live a completely illogical existence as a species.
