Will this electric car give Tesla battle for the throne?

The dashboard is a 40-inch display.

Electric car news from obscure brands you've never heard of should you usually bring a small pinch of salt, but if you're going to judge the professionalism of the launch, the upcoming Byton electric car could be a big success.

Byton was started by former employees in, among others, Tesla and BMW, and today has experience from both Google and Apple in chief positions. The company thundered the huge CES fair in Las Vegas to launch its new electric car concept on Sunday.

"It's time to think about the car again, it's all about it, and in some areas it seems that Byton designers have just done that.

Huge dashboard screen
Most eye-catching is probably the 40-inch wide screen that covers almost the entire dashboard, and unusually it's also with touch screen embedded in the wheel itself. Of course, there are two big screens for the seats behind, complete with webcam and everything.

Both the front and rear seats can be adjusted and the front seats can be rotated 12 degrees inwards to give the rear passengers a better view of the dashboard screen. Otherwise, the car is reminiscent of a smartphone clean, with touch screens everywhere, voice steering through Amazon Alexa, face detection and support for fast-moving data speeds with 5G.

Outside, the Byton car is currently quite typical concept car, with very nice lines and attractive surfaces.

For example, the car has no visible door handles, in addition to the fact that the surfaces where the grill is usually on fossil cars has LED strips, which can be used to indicate charging status when moving near the car.

It also has no side mirrors, only cameras scattered around giving you a video feed inside the car. The ugly antenna on the roof is also replaced with antennas integrated into the roof itself, and Byton claims that you would need four common antennas to get the same good signals as the newly developed integrated antennas provide.

At least 400 kilometers range
The car otherwise measures 4.85 meters long, 1.94 meters wide and 1.65 meters tall, and the wheelbase is 2.95 meters. It makes it a little bigger in all directions than a Tesla Model 3. The car is built on the city's newly developed electric car platform, and it will open for more Byton cars as soon as possible. The company has concrete plans for a sedan and a larger multi-purpose truck, so-called MPV.

The current concept car will come in two editions. The cheapest model will have a battery of 71 kWh, 400 km range, rear-wheel drive and 272 horsepower while the strongest model comes with 95 kWh battery, 520 km range, four-wheel drive and 476 horses. The cars should also be able to charge fast: 80 percent in 30 minutes.

Byton pricelessly announces that the car will start at $ 45,000 (about $ 362,000 at today's rate, although US prices rarely translate directly into Norwegian conditions), and the price combined with its reach makes Byton claim that this will be the first affordable electric car on the market that meets the requirements to be the number one car for a family. It is possible Tesla will have an objection to it.

The car also comes with level 3 self-launch on launch, which will be expanded to level 4 by 2020. Level 3 implies that the car under certain conditions has a number of self-driving features, while level 4 allows the car to completely take over a number of situations.

In addition, the car should be able to use machine learning both to get to know you and to inform you that the car is subject to an attack or that some need service. Even critical hardware components can be upgraded throughout the life cycle of the car, so the car can always be updated to the latest.

Byton already has design studio in Munich, Germany, Santa Clara development unit in Silicon Valley and offices in several of the largest Chinese cities. Headquartered in Nanjing, and this is also where the company is building its first factory.

The launch of the car will take place in late 2019, in China, the United States and Europe. Should you be interested you can already book a car at byton.com.
