Essential Phone 2 is the weirdest phone in the world!steemCreated with Sketch.

Essential is a company founded by one of the creators of Android, Andy Rubin.

In 2017, she released the Essential Phone PH-1 smartphone, and now Andy gives us a look at the second phone.

And yeah ... it's a long unit. In a literal sense! The device has the same form factor as the TV remote, about the same length as a six-inch smartphone, but somewhere twice as narrow.

Apparently, the Android version is installed on the smartphone, which is modified for such an interesting screen size. The project is codenamed Project Gem and, obviously, it will be available in various vibrant colors. Unless of course this smartphone will appear on the market at all.

Because, yes, now that all smartphones are pretty much the same, such a project probably makes sense, because what else can we do innovative, except to make them much worse. This is a natural cycle.

This is similar to those old memes that people did about the future of the iPhone. When the iPhone 5 was released 7 years ago, many joked on the Internet because of its narrow form factor.

But who would have thought that memes from 2012 would become a reality these days?

The smartphone has a hole in the screen. The user interface consists of small application blocks. The back has a fingerprint scanner and one camera.

Of course, we must pay tribute to Andy Rubin for trying something new. But still it’s very difficult to understand what is the point here, except for hype?

I do not think that at least someone will find this smartphone useful. Just think how inconvenient it is to print something. Watching videos or images will be a nightmare. And it is unlikely that developers will bother adapting their applications to this screen.

I hope he at least has an infrared port. At least it can be sold as a smart remote control from the TV, in another way I can not imagine how else to sell this strange device.

I tried very hard to find at least one advantage of this design, but could not. It looks like the Galaxy Fold folded again. People, write in the comments, if you have thoughts about what this smartphone can be useful in ???

That is, I don’t even think that this remote control phone will even perform the role of an accompanying device, similar to a Palm smartphone.

It seems so fragile that it can simply break in half in your pocket. Although it will attract the attention of girls, while in your pocket. Um, sorry, could not resist.

Seriously, small phones really make sense, yes, but what's the point of being so narrow and tall? What will happen next, round smartphones?

I don’t want to seem to those who criticize something radically new, but from a practical point of view, I still don’t understand what it is, but let's see where it all leads.
