With the trend going to using robots for a lot of jobs that humans do today, the question is : What should we do to prepare for the age of the robots?
Coding/ programming is becoming more and more popular every day. A lot of people ask themselves if they can do it, or is it too early or to late to start coding. I think getting kids prepared for this era is the best thing we can do.
Coding for kids is now easier than ever ! With platforms like code.org, scratch.org, tynker.com coding is understandable and reachable for kids.
But, how far can they go ?! Currently I've been working with kids at the age from 7 to 16. I've been teaching them coding and robotics for a year now. And I have to say, the results are impressing !!
With these above mentioned platforms, they were able to learn programming fundamentals. Of course, the results between the kids were not the same. Those below 10 years old, were slower but there were some individuals who were better than the grown ups !
About robotics, I used LEGO Mindstorms to try to teach them the way sensors work, and how to use collected data from the sensors to make the robot smart. I was even more impressed in robotics. They were able to completely understand IR sensors, Ultra-sound sensors, touch sensors etc.
So based on my experience, I would suggest for the kids to start coding from 10 years old, but there may be some exceptions about kids with higher IQ.
