Once again leading the charge into the future, tech giant Amazon has done it again. This time partnering with Fidelity Labs, the massive online retailer is creating a virtual reality platform where users can confer with financial advisors about their investment portfolios.
On Tuesday, the two companies displayed a VR demonstration that is capable of fully interacting with people with only a VR headset and an internet connection.
Headed up by Fidelity Labs - the research department of Fidelity Investments - the project was meant to be a full-featured display of Amazon's Sumerian VR and augmented reality tools for third party developers. While often overshadowed by companies like Google and Apple, Amazon has also quietly rolled out its own VR development platform.
While at first glance, it may seem that virtual reality and finance don't find many places to intersect, it appears that someone at Fidelity has convinced the higher ups that investing in a virtual reality investment platform was a smart move. To say that most individuals who even own an investment portfolio are not particularly tech savvy is an understatement.
Still, it's hard to say that partnering with Amazon is a bad move by any stretch of the imagination.
Regarding the demonstration itself, the way it works is that users can speak one on one to a digital financial planner named Cora to help users check their portfolio. Users tell Cora what stocks they want to check and she pulls them up on a virtual chart displayed on her office wall, similar to how people give presentations using a projector.
By utilizing voice-recognition technology, Cora is able to identify what stocks are being requested without users resorting to messing around with a complicated VR controller or keyboard. Fidelity Labs and Amazon have essentially created a hands-free program to check stocks in real time.
In terms of corporate motivation, it appears that Amazon created this little demonstration as a way to lure businesses to utilize their developer tools for their own purposes. While the tech giant is responsible for the largest online marketplace in the world, it's a little known fact that their greatest moneymaker is their Amazon Web Services cloud computing features.
If businesses start pursuing VR in full-force, they'll need somewhere to host their programs. And where better than with AWS?
Here at Lucyd, we see the need for programs like this. While applications for augmented and virtual reality are a no-brainer for industries like gaming, the future of these technologies will ultimately be determined by how effectively businesses utilize them to generate profits for their companies.
With our Lucyd Lens smartglasses coming out in Q1 2019, we envision a world where independent third party developers will be able to create simple apps for checking their portfolios - much like Fidelity and Amazon are doing here. And once the power of augmented reality is fully utilized by the integration of an intuitive piece of hardware like our smartglasses, we're sure that this technology will become mainstream in no time.
What do you think about Fidelity's VR experiment?
