Will Marrying Robots Ever Be A Reality In The Future?

If you want a peek at the future and the world that will be, you don’t need a time machine anymore. Just read the science fiction of today and you will get a basic idea.

Of course, not everything in science fiction becomes a reality. There are these things called laws of physics that you just can’t break. But hey! Even within those limits, technology has, and always will, keep surprising us.

The other day I was watching this movie called “Ghost In A Shell” starring Scarlett Johansson in which she is an enhanced human, where she has the brain of a human and the body of a robot. This made me think.

In the future, we could very well head down the same road where our bodies will be enhanced with cybernetic parts or one day even be able to download our consciousness into a robot. What is more likely however, is robots as separate entities living amongst us as a race of their own. In such a future, could we imagine a human-robot relationship?

The Rise of Robots

1.jpg

Although the advancement of robotics have been quite impressive in the past few decades, the image that we all have in our minds of a human like robot being able to function like a human and virtually do everything that we can, still seems like a far off dream.

But, while that may be true, robots are already extensively used in the modern day. They are used by the military, in manufacturing, in space exploration, in the medical field, for rescue missions and also in agriculture.

As for the humanoid robots shown in the movies, there are basically two pieces that need to become much more advanced and come together effortlessly. The hardware part and the software part. While we do have the hardware part of the puzzle to an extent, the software needs to catch up.

There are however major strides being made on that software part too. With artificial intelligence advancing as fast as it is, we may finally realise the rise of the humanoid robots well before 2050. We will finally have created a race of robots that can think for themselves and take intelligent decisions and who will also display and respond to emotions.

Robots As Spouse?

2.jpg

Some of the smartest people are already talking about establishing a set of rights that these sort of robots will have and how they will fit into our society. It may sound like a bunch of fantasy talk but it always does until it becomes real.

Robots that are empowered by AI, that can exist along side our own human race can definitely be possible in the future. In such a world, is it too far-fetched to imagine a literal marriage between the two?

If a robot, that looks exactly like a human, sounds exactly like a human, moves like a human, is able to have any type of conversation, is able to identify feelings and share its own and shows the same level of intelligence and maturity as a human, would you be able to fall in love with one and perhaps even marry one?

Maybe. Maybe not. There are many people that believe this will indeed happen. For that to ever become a reality, the human society will have to evolve and our concept of love and marriage will need to change and of course the law would need to reflect that change as well.

An Impossible Reality?

3.jpg

Although society and our own views on the matter might change, there are still a lot of problems that will be almost impossible to solve even with the cutting edge technology of the time.

For example, there is a question about procreation which may prove to be one of the most difficult one as in my views, it might be completely impossible to recreate in robots.

Then there is the problem of self awareness that might prove to be extremely difficult because how do you even create consciousness and then you have individual personalities that are shaped by nurture as well as nature, both of which may not be an available option for robots that are built in factories.

Some of these issues and characteristics are so unique to humans and something that we even don’t understand fully about ourselves that it just seems too far-fetched to imagine we will recreate them in a creation of our own. If we do however, I think we will need to re-examine what being human even means!

It really sounds like a bunch of fantasy talk or movie but I belive it will become real.
Maybe my generation won't see it, but my grandchildren will have it like a normal life....

Yeah, it is fantasy talk at the moment but the way society evolves really is surprising. Just look at the last 2 centuries worth of societal and technological evolution. It's astounding!

The question is, will marrying body pillows be a reality in the future?

I think that's already happened.

As themadgoat says, that's already happened!! LOL

Somebody managed to marry a train station recently, so I wouldn't put it past anybody.

Women already have BOB s.... Battery operated boyfriends...

LOL at that!! haha But a marriage is much more, don't you think?

I'm sure there are some people already "married" to robots or machines... just not state licensed marriage

haha, I hear ya!

I don't think it's a matter of if... it's a matter of when. In a free society, it includes the freedom to be stupid. Not to mention robots are getting more life like every year. Its getting pretty bizarre, but at least we have a platform like steemit to discuss it on :D

giphy (13).gif

lul thats spaced out

I know right!

its really hard to think that way ... bcoz practically i dont think this thing will work out as humans will only be complete with humans only
BUT I APPRETIATE YOUR THOUGHT.. :)

yes, I totally understand. Doesn't sound practical at all. But then again, there are all sorts of people in the world.

ya true that way too...

Marrying a robot is already done in Japan, the old man (I dont know the name) have already get married with his sex doll. However, that is also possible. The best example here is. When your husband or wife suffer severe damage from an accident. Like lost both feet and need to undergo robotic treatment. There you already have a half human half machine wife or husband.

Yeah, I heard about it. But right now, they cannot fulfil other needs like emotional, intellectual and that sort of thing.

With all due respect, it doesn't sound reasonable to me.
In fact it seems to be a serious 'failure of imagination' on the part of 'SF writers' (I would probably dispute that title) and Hollyweird.

Failure of imagination for hollyweird is the default setting...nothing new there.
(full disclosure...I've been reading science fiction since the early sixties...I've read several thousand books...I've even written a few myself)

Doesn't sound reasonable to me at all too! haha hollyweird is a creative name! :D

Inconceivable!

Lol xD. I don't think having robots as partners will help humanity in the long run.

haha I know, but not impossible! ;)

I remember a twilight zone episode where a fella was stranded for a period on a planet with a robot machine companion. He fell in love with here and wanted to take her back when his crew returned for him. A crew member destroyed the robot machine. He was only allowed to take so many lbs on his return. This would have been about 1960..

I also know there are folks who would love to mix humans and artificial intelligence into a new species. I believe the word is Singularity. The drawback - It would take on a new image as it would not be in God's image or DNA and perhaps void of a conscience or soul. Great read, Thanks.

That sounds like an interesting show! The idea has been around for quite some while now and Transhumanism is something that many predict will indeed happen. So, only time will tell.

Starting to my love for Isaac Asimov, I've always thought that robots will be not only simple, useful "objects" in the future and I'm pretty sure that someone could be fall in love with a robot. Humanize something not human remind me the childhood, when a baby think about his/her teddy bear as a real friend. Maybe we are all like that baby in front of the evolution of robotics ^_^

Yeah, if you humanise a robot to an extent that it is simply indistinguishable with a real person, then I can certainly see this happening and one day being considered as 'normal'.

It is real already...

Maybe not marrying... but perhaps other similar things....

LOL, I hear ya!

You got my vote and a resteem :)

Thanks! :D

Wow, what a crazy idea, but I love crazy ideas. I think this one is so extreme, is like to put in the same balance plants and animals, it doesn't works, and never will. But the approach is so interesting.
Cheers.

There is nothing crazier than marrying a machine!! hahah But even an idea as crazy as this, it is highly plausible.

All Hail my future A.I. overlord who will be one day reading this

haha they may just excuse you after reading this comment :P

Machine oil before sex LOLOL.. We have VR for now, guess robots will be the next big thing.. :D Great article made me giggle when I red the title. Honestly this might be the next big thing in the future now that I look at it.

Yeah, you could literally buy your spouse like any other commodity. How crazy is that?? LOL

All in are hands, some will like to and some will not

Yup, that's for sure. Most will, I think want to be with humans.

i don't see a difference, a robot could be more loyal tho

Only if it doesn't get hacked ;)

Truly sentient robots would probably not be interested in having a relationship with a human. Their rate of thought would be much faster, therefore time would seem to pass more slowly for them. Dealing with us would probably be monotonous. Having an intimate emotional relationship with an android would likely be impossible, until we found a way to drastically enhance our own minds.

I never thought of it from the point of view of the robots. VERY interesting. This surely changes things. I believe that by the time there are sentient robots, we will have enhanced ourselves enough as well. So, might be we are on their level or on a level that they may consider satisfactory enough to be in a relationship.

That would be really scary..

I know right!! Imagine sleeping next to your robot spouse and them getting hacked! They could kill you in an instant lol!

Hahahah yes!!! And a robot/human child?? That would be insane!

Nice

Thanks! :D

I really like your post, I will wait for the next post

Thank you :)

Fantasy could drive humans to any extent
Am sure certain love human-robot relationship exist
Films on human-robot relationship had given us a glimpse
There was one with a man who was jealous of the man because of a lady
Lets see our things turn out

yeah, I think that only a small number of people will opt for this. but as you say, time will tell.

Well, science have proven that they are capable of anything with new finding each day

yeah, lots of crazy things become true!

Yes it will be.

I believe so too!

Could humans be robots?

Yeah sure why not. Many ways to go about it.

I think it's all a fantasy. Robots are inanimate objects that are engineered by humans with technological capabilities that resemble humans. there is no creation in this perfect world like the creation of a god. God is beyond mere humans and beings in this world

Yeah, but day, they will be simply indistinguishable from the real thing. It's not a matter of if but when.

Most of us are already marry to our phones, we can not live without it. It even nags at us all day long.

hahahha So true!

lol it might happen

Yeah, it very well might!

Have you seen the movie Her? He falls in love with his OS system. Very fascinating. Got reminded of it, when reading your article. You would probably like the movie too!

I haven't but I was intrigued by the trailer. I was asking myself if such a thing can even be possible, falling in love with an OS!! haha. Sounds crazy.

oOOo watch it! It's so good! :) Let me know what ya think!

beyond from imagine.....

Right now it is. In the future, not so much.

That would be crazy but its not impossible :)

Exactly what I think as well!

i don't think so that people will marry with robots in future..
some natural needs are necessary for humans that a robot will not pay it properly
and a robot cannot understand the feelings of others that a human feels inside..
it is just and negativity ..

Read the post once.

If I look this video .... then I think it is normal soon :)))))

LOL That's hilarious!! hahahah

I was think same ...And now if I look your text then it looks normal :))))

Yes, definitely. @sauravrungta The real question will be if robots want to marry us..

Yeah good question!!

the true question is would be interested in marrying robots if it is possible in the future ?

that's the question.

Hi @sauravrungta, It's great to know about the advancement of the modern science IT in particular. The basic function of the machine is to make tasks easy for humans but in today's times, we see life is more complex than ever before. Humans in the past had simpler, healthier and longer lives and they were happier too. There is primarily wrong not with the advancement in science and tech but in their usage. Anyway, it was an informative post. keep it up man! UPVOTED!

I agree with you and thanks for reading man :)

Thank you for that post it reminded me of "The Ship Who Sang" book and series. It is old, very old. From wikipedia:

The Ship Who Sang (1969) is a science fiction novel by Anne McCaffrey, a fix-up of five stories published 1961 to 1969. By an alternate reckoning, "The Ship Who Sang" is the earliest of the stories, a novelette, which became the first chapter of the book.[2] Finally, the entire "Brain & Brawn Ship series" (or Brainship or Ship series), written by McCaffrey and others, is sometimes called the "Ship Who Sang series" by bibliographers, merchants, or fans.

Good series

Thanks for reading! :)

I think we will become the robots of the future. We'll start with replacing limbs, organs and eyes with synthetic parts. Bit by bit as we fall apart we'll be upgraded with the latest carbon fibre body part. Lastly the brain, could that be replaced and if so what kind of human will we be? With regard to AI it's a fascinating idea that they may walk among us as equals with rights and treated accordingly by a human code of ethics.

Yeah that's definitely going to happen. I think in the future, the world population will be a mix of three species. Pure humans, pure robots and part humans part robots. Strange!

I dont know but robots didnt have souls...!

Yup, that's where the AI steps in I guess.

I think the fact that Sex Robots are here already suggests that the idea of marrying a robot isn't too far. My guess would be that it's more likely we'll see men showing interest in this kind of reality though there will probably be some women heading that way.
I don't think this kind of reality will suit everyone - personally, I'm not a fan of this development.. I'd be scared for mankind...

Yeah, I am not a fan of this either but in my mind, I think this could really happen in the future and one day might even be seen as something "normal".

What happened to the good old fashioned sex life? Not good anymore in the 21st century? The way I see it, let those robot huggers indulge in their fantasy; in the long run, natural selection will get rid of them. Nature is about procreation and perpetuating the species. Species that don't evolve, die.

I totally agree with you. The thing with natural selection though, is that it tends to living things not the machines. Since we humans are the ones creating them, how would natural selection get rid of them?

Not everyone would afford an expensive robot. While the rich are busy humping metal, we will continue proliferating like rabbits. In the end, rabbits rule 🐰
