The British e-security agency has asked government departments not to use anti-virus software produced by Russian company Kaspersky Lab.
"Russia is acting against the UK's national interest in cyberspace," said Syran Martin, president of the National Center for Cyber Security.
In a letter dated Friday to the heads of civil administrations, he said Russia was seeking "to target the central government and sensitive national infrastructure in the United Kingdom."
He pointed out that "it is absolutely forbidden to use a provider in Russia" for systems dealing with issues related to national security.
The agency says it does not offer this advice to the general public against the use of Kaspersky's common antivirus products.
Martin said British authorities were in talks with Kaspersky about preventing "the transfer of UK data to the Russian state."
Kaspersky has denied wrongdoing, saying it does not help Russian e-espionage efforts.
