Celebrate women in tech, a day late for Ada Lovelace day

I missed this event yesterday. I need to get it on my calendar to remind me.

I've worked in IT for around 30 years and there has always been a shortage of women. My current employer has around 200 developers spread around the world, but I think only around 10-20% are female. I don't get to the other offices to check. There's only 1 in the 10 at our office.

It's been similar through my career, but the women I've worked with have been great at their job. It's definitely not about ability, but it just seem that boys are more inclined to get into computers when they are young and carry on with that field.

My first computer science teacher was a lady. Barbara Jaworski introduced me to programming around 1979 when she started a lunchtime club where we would share a terminal to type in BASIC programs. She's still in education.

I actually met author and social media evangelist Dr Sue Black recently. She was awarded an OBE for her work in IT.

If you are interested in Ada Lovelace then I encourage you to check out the work of comic artist Sydney Padua (a lady BTW) who has written a comic series based on what Ada and Charles Babbage could have gotten up to. I've just ordered the book.

I live in the next town to where Ada lived. There's a building named after her there.

Where's that? It's great that she is being recognised these days.
