Planet Similar to Earth Spread in the Universe, Like What ?

in technology •  7 years ago

With the discovery of many planet like Earth that may be habitable, what exactly makes them said to accommodate life? It is clear, the characteristics must be similar to Earth.

Astrobiologists say there are enough livable planets in the Milky Way Galaxy based on several categories,

First, they have a distance proportional to the nearest Star, so it does not have temperatures that are too hot or too cold. Some researchers call that distance into the habitable zone, or the Goldilocks Zone.

Then, the planet must be made of rocks, so planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus made of gas have no capability to provide life for humans.

Then, the size is large enough to have a core made of molten material that can provide a source of energy. The Earth core itself is able to provide geothermal energy sources to recycle raw materials and create magnetic fields to protect the Earth from radiation.

Finally, it has a layer of atmosphere capable of enveloping the planet to hold various gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, to keep the temperature inside the planet warm. In addition, the atmosphere can also protect the planet from exposure to radiation.

However, researchers can not simply conclude that the planet that fills that category becomes habitable. This is reflected in the condition of the Earth itself that experienced drastic changes over the years.

Should be evaluated whether the condition will continue to persist for long periods of time. In addition, experts also have to see the signs of whether the planet can be inhabited in the past.

For example, Mars, which has a river basin and the bottom of the lake, so astrobiologists wonder whether the cold and dry planet had been covered by water. If true, then it is not impossible there is still a remnant of water deep within the surface of the planet.

Then, there is also the possibility that the planet that now has no life was inhabited by various creatures in the past, since every living creature must change the environment, ecosystem, and leave traces both physically and chemically.

The discovery of fossils or other remains of life can provide much information as to how extinct lives once took place. Although of course with the current technology, exploring to a remote planet that looks like the earth has not been possible.
