Intel's Response to AMD's Threadripper is a little underwhelming. i9-7980xe ''Extreme''.

It hasn't been long since AMD launched the Threadripper CPU, and this monster of a chip blew all the Intel processors out of the water on both performance and price point. Intel seemingly provided a hole in the marketplace and AMD took advantage and flew into the lead, crushing Intel on price and performance, with there Ryzen and Threadripper line up.

This has happened in the past when AMD crept to the top of the pile with the Athlon AM2 line up. But soon after that was put to an end when Intel brought out the ''I'' range. I3, i5, and eventually the i7. Since then Intel have stuck to their guns, all the i3's 5's 7's are still about but improved socket and architecture design. For a long time now, Team Blue have been the go to CPU if you want performance and Team Red has been based on budget systems with reasonable performance.

Summer 2017 saw a change in the status quo when AMD released the Ryzen and Threadripper processors. When put head to head with Intel at the same price point, AMD basically took a big shit on team blues front door, set it on fire and rang the bell while stood there. And on a performance base, AMD and Intel bump heads until you get to the top of the line with the Threadripper 1950x, standing at 16 logical cores (8 physical), a clock speed around the 4Ghz range and all this under £1000.

Intel's response to this is the release of the i9-7980xe 'EXTREME' edition. This new chip boasts 18 cores with 36 threads running at 4.2Ghz Turbo, but the price is almost double that of team reds top end chip. ''really Intel? 2 more cores and double the price?'' in both single and multi core applications the I9 appears unstoppable, but the results in gaming is mixed, depending if the game was designed to work better with AMD or not. But at £2000 would you really want to spend that much just for a minor increase in performance?

When it comes down to it. For you moneys worth... pound for pound AMD will always win and in terms of power usage, AMD come up trumps again.

With Intel trying to win back consumers and contracts as the most powerful chip manufacturer on the market I think will be short lived. AMD has yet to release to the public is crowning achievement to put Intel firmly in its place by making them stomp on that burning turd. AMD Ryzen Threadripper Epyc is currently server bound, but after delidding a 1950x, it has been discovered it has two dummy chips and room to double its performance which will be epic. 32 cores (16 physical) with 64 threads. Running at a rumoured 3.8Ghz base clock and also rumoured to cost less than £1600 will undoubtedly beat team blue for a long time.

I think AMD have been waiting to see what Intel would do in response to the Threadripper 1950x before they complete there Ryzen Line up and humiliate Intel, yet again when the Threadripper Epyc is available to the public.

Only time will tell.
