The Chorora fault as a tectonic marker for the opening of the Afar triple junction

in tectonics •  6 years ago

The Chorora formation formed as the Danakil-Aisha block separated from Somalia at the north-eastern edge of Chorora, leading to faulting in a direction following the Mid Ethiopian Rift towards the south-west, the 100 km long Chorora fault. The fault is a tectonic marker for that the Mid Ethiopian Rift extended upwards between Danakil and Ethiopia, and that the Gulf of Aden rift is an extension of the Carlsberg rift, extending towards Afar in an east-west direction, causing the Danakil-Aisha block to tear away from the north-eastern edge of the Chorora fault, and triggering the faulting of that region.
