I think that telegram is moving in the right direction by planning an ICO. However, some say that it is just a way for Durov to monetise the platform. I have recently heard of e-chat, which is an entirely decentralised application that is also a social network and a wallet. That, in my opinion, is future. Currently, the only issue with such DApps is scalability. It highly depends on how successful Ethereum Virtual Machine developers are in making system as efficient as current centralised systems are!
