My Eleven Statements-One Lie, Ten Are True
1- I was born a natural redhead.
✅Truth. I was a flaming redhead from birth, then hair turned auburn in my teens. I don’t dye my hair and more blonde in it as I age.
2- I gave up eating meat for years as a teenager after seeing my father butcher a pig.
@iseeyouvee, sorry but this is a truth. I still prefer veggies over meat.
✅Truth. Growing up on a farm, I saw a lot of heads chopped off chickens and butchering of animals for food. I couldn’t eat the meat after seeing pigs being slaughtered.
3- My duties before and after school were to fetch water up from the spring and carry wood in for the stove.
@blog-beginner guessed this one as the lie. It is the truth- I did this along with milk a cow when Dad was away working.
✅Truth. No inside plumbing in the house and wood had to be brought in for the only heat source. Being the oldest it was my duties to do this if my father was away working. Not a bad duty in summer but winter was a bitch.
4- I am the oldest of five children.
✅Truth. At present there is only four of us.
One of my three brothers passed at five. He slid down the neighbors driveway, on a toboggan, onto the main road and was hit by a car. It was Christmas Eve. I was 16 at the time.
5- There is a 15 year difference between me and my youngest brother.
✅Truth. First there was me and my brother who is almost 6 yrs younger. Then 13 yrs after my birth, my sister came along and my younger brother, 15 yrs. later.
If you were to talk to my sister and younger brother about their childhood, it is completely different than my upbringing.
My parents changed roles by the time those two came along. My sister and I often laugh about how mother’s personality became softer and Dad more the disciplinarian and critic.
6- I have been in 5 countries;, Canada, U.S.A., England, Ireland, Wales.
✅Truth. I live in Canada and had relatives living in all other countries except Wales. Dad’s sister lived in the U.S.A. Mother’s sister lived in England and when we went there, she drove us through Wales to go across the Irish Sea to Ireland.
7- At fifteen, not having driven before, I drove a car through a wooden railing on a bridge. My friend and I went down 40 ft. Into the shallow water and survived without an injury, although the car was totalled.
Unbelievable. I know, @themightyvolcano, put it actually happened.
✅Truth. My claim to fame! I was famous or perhaps infamous for having survived this accident.
I went back to my hometown years later and more than one person came up to me and said,
“Aren’t you the Collicott girl that went over the bridge and lived to tell about it.”
How it happened~ A friend stopped in with a new ford car and wanted directions to a certain person’s house. It was quite complicated to explain the directions and I agreed to go with him.
I talked about wanting to learn to drive. He thought it would be okay to let me drive as hardly any traffic in the countryside and no cops stationed in the village.
Going around a turn on the gravel road, I hit the gas instead of the brake. Coming out of the turn there loomed a bridge with wooden sides. I pumped the wrong pedal harder!
Bang! Crack! Snap! ! I can still see the broken planks of the wooden sides of the bridge flying into the air as the front end of the car took them out.
In slow motion (or so it seemed) we descended into the shallow water. The car landed on it’s tires but was wrecked from going through the railing and from hitting huge boulders in the water.
We sat stunned in our seats as the car landed with a loud thump ~ the engine whined to a halt...
I looked at my companion and his glasses were smashed and hanging down off his nose. But not a scratch on either of us!
A guardian angel must have brought the car down gently.
8- I won $10,000.00 at a special bingo game and the cheque bounced.
@andysantics48 and @thekitchenfairy guessed this this one. Sorry ladies but it really happened.
✅Truth. 3 friends and I went to a large bingo at a casino on the Maliseet Land. The 1st prize was a car, the 2nd was $10,000.00, with minors prizes on down.
I had suggested we split three ways if one of us won. I won the second prize on a game called Bonanza.
After the win, the organizers asked me if I wanted cash or a cheque. I said cheque because there was so many people there I didn’t want to be seen leaving with a pile of cash.
I wrote a cheque to each friend for $3333.67. The next day I went to the bank and deposited the $10,000.00 cheque in my account... and shopping I did go!
3 days later my bank phoned me and said there was a problem...
No money in the bank account the $10,000.00 cheque was written on. I was in a panic as my 2 friends had cashed their cheques and that put me in overdraft over $6,000.00 once the $10,000.00 was worthless.
One good friend said not to worry she would give me her share back.
The other friend said,
”Why should I give it back? Let the bank deal with it,”
”That’s not the way it works!” I had worked at a Credit Union and if you cash a bad cheque it’s your responsibility-the bank doesn’t take the loss.
I stewed for a few hours and then took action. I went back to the casino and sitting at a table with some other people was the chief’s brother. I knew him vaguely and went to him and said,
“ I need to talk with you about a bounced cheque.”
The chief’s brother jumped up from his chair and took me aside. I explained what happened. He looked at the cheque and said it was written on the wrong account. There had been a mix-up with their accounts.
He made arrangements for a new cheque to be drawn up and given to me. I crossed my fingers as I drove directly to the bank, where the cheque was written, to make sure it was good. It was!
The moral of my story: Always take the cash!
9- I once rode a horse 21 miles from my father’s farm in New Brunswick to Houlton, Maine where my aunt lived.
❌The Lie. It was not me but my father’s sister who rode her Arabian horse the 21 miles. My aunt lived in Houlton and had this beautiful horse she rode in parades.
She rode with another friend and they stopped at another relative to rest once they crossed the border into Canada. Then rode on to my father’s farm and stayed a few days before riding their horses back through the border.
No one guessed the lie. There will be a consolation prize for everyone participating in the contest.
10- I do not have a known blood relative within 500 km (310 miles) of where I live on Prince Edward Island.
@kiwideb guessed this one. It’s true. It does seem strange, coming from a small village, where in my childhood, all my Dad’s relatives lived within walking distance of each other. I went to school with lots of cousins.
✅Truth. My sister and two brothers live in 3 different provinces and the closest is 500 km. We do manage to get together a few times a year. I will be going to see my sister this weekend for Easter.
11- I have an aunt still living at 97 years old.
✅Truth. The only one left of my father’s generation. She lives in a Seniors apartment and still makes bread and has her wits about her.
Since no one guessed the lie, each of the participant’s wallet will receive a little something.

Thanks for the consolation prize - very kind :-) Andy & I have an aunt still living at 94; still in her own home and with all her marbles. She is also the only one left out of Dad and his brothers and sisters.

Haha @kiwideb. It’s a sign those good genes will carry down to us to have our marbles at 94. I think I’ve lost a few already. 🤯 😀
