The Czech team Charouz Racing System celebrates its second place on the podium in the current FIA Formula 2 season. David Beckmann finished second in the second sprint on the city circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan, and thus followed the podium from the inaugural event in Bahrain.
The German finished thirteenth in Friday's qualifying and already in Saturday's first race indicated that he had brought great form to Baku. Ninth place was not enough for points, but it meant a start position from the first row in the second sprint. And that was the water at Němcův mlýn. For a while, it even seemed that Beckmann would leave all opponents behind. In the end, he finished with an excellent tactical ride for imaginary silver.
Also on Sunday, the young pilot was already about to obtain some points, but his position in the top ten was in the end ruined by a penalty. Five seconds on top for breaking the rules in the pits ended up in the twelfth position in the finish. Even this time, however, he showed that he can boldly compete with the fastest.
Unfortunately, Beckmann's teammate Guilherme Samaia did not shine. It should be noted, however, that he also rode in Baku for the first time and the city circuits simply "is not his cup of coffee". He finished seventeenth, fourteenth and eighteenth, which are not results that can be celebrated with joy. However, the Brazilian gained valuable experience from which he can benefit in upcoming races.
The next FIA Formula 2 racing weekend will take place on the legendary track in Silverstone, UK, on July 16th-18th.
Antonin Charouz, the owner of the team, said: “David's second place is a great success. We used the reverse order at the start after the first sprint, David acted like an experienced driver. We were close to some more points, especially in the main race. Unfortunately, what happened ruined our chances. Guilherme tried his best, but unfortunately he was not lucky this time. In any case, he learned a lot of new things about city districts, which will be useful in Jeddah in December. "
David Beckmann said: “The sprint podium is a reward for the good performance of the whole team. After Monte Carlo, we improved the car's settings, I was much more confident this time. Only the qualification did not go according to our plans, because I was blocked by an opponent, otherwise I could have finished in the top ten. As for the main race, I did well, overtaking several opponents. But then the penalty - well, I don't know. I think it was not necessary. I will have to take a look what exactly happened. I'm looking forward to Silverstone, I believe in great success after what we achieved this weekend. "
Guilherme Samaia explained: "This weekend was not easy, I went to Baku for the first time. It is difficult to keep the tires at the optimum temperature. Otherwise, I always started well, but I had problems with the tires. In the main race, someone hit me and damaged the car. It was a really challenging weekend. But I'm ready to work hard and be as good as possible on the Silverstone circuit. "

Český tým Charouz Racing System slaví druhé umístění na stupních vítězů v probíhající sezóně FIA Formula 2. David Beckmann totiž skončil ve druhém sprintu na městském okruhu v ázerbajdžánském Baku druhý a navázal tak na stupně vítězů z úvodního podniku v Bahrajnu.
Němec skončil v páteční kvalifikaci třináctý a už v prvním sobotním sprintu naznačil, že si do Baku přivezl skvělou formu. Deváté místo ještě na body nestačilo, znamenalo ale start z první řady ve druhém sprintu. A to byla voda na Němcův mlýn. Chvíli to dokonce vypadalo, že Beckmann nechá za sebou úplně všechny soupeře. Nakonec si výbornou taktickou jízdou dojel pro pomyslné stříbro.
Také v neděli měl mladý pilot skončit na bodech, umístění v elitní desítce mu ale zhatila penalizace. Pět sekund navrch za porušení pravidel v boxech nakonec znamenalo v cíli až dvanáctou pozici. I tentokrát však ukázal, že se může směle měřit s nejrychlejšími, na špičku nijak zásadně neztrácel.
Beckmannův týmový kolega Guilherme Samaia bohužel nezářil. Je ale třeba podotknout, že také on jel v Baku poprvé a městské okruhy mu zkrátka zatím “nedělají dobře”. Skončil sedmnáctý, čtrnáctý a osmnáctý, což nejsou výsledky, ze kterých by se dalo skákat radostí. Brazilec ale získal cenné zkušenosti, ze kterých může těžit do dalších závodů.
Další závodní víkend FIA Formule 2 se pojede na legendární trati v britském Silverstone 16. – 18. července.
Antonin Charouz, majitel týmu, uvedl: „Druhé místo Davida je skvělý úspěch. Využili jsme obraceného pořadí na startu po prvním sprintu, David si počínal jako zkušený mazák. Byli jsme blízko i dalším bodům, zejména v hlavním závodě. Bohužel se stalo to, co se stalo. Guilherme se snažil, jak nejlépe dovedl, bohužel tentokrát při něm ani nestálo štěstí. Každopádně se naučil spoustu nových věcí o městských okruzích, což bude užitečné v prosinci v Jeddahu.“
David Beckmann řekl: „Pódium ze sprintu je odměna za dobrý výkon celého týmu. Po Monte Carlu jsme vylepšili nastavení vozu, za volantem jsem se cítil mnohem jistější. Pouze kvalifikace nebyla ideální, protože mě zablokoval soupeř, jinak jsem mohl skončit v první desítce. Pokud jde o hlavní závod, vedl jsem si dobře, předjel několik soupeřů. Ale pak ta penalizace…no, nevím. Myslím, že byla zbytečná. Podíváme se, co přesně se stalo. Těším se na Silverstone, po tomto víkendu věřím v úspěch.“
Guilherme Samaia vysvětlil: „Tento víkend nebyl snadný, v Baku jsem jel poprvé. Je zde složité udržovat pneumatiky v optimální teplotě, zejména po restartech za safety car. Jinak jsem vždy odstartoval dobře, ale právě s pneumatikami jsem měl problémy. V hlavním závodě do mě navíc někdo vrazil a poškodil jsem auto. Byl to opravdu náročný víkend. Ale jsem připraven tvrdě pracovat a být na okruhu v Silverstone co nejlepší.“
