Cabbages & Condoms is a famous Bangkok restaurant that I have been meaning to visit for years - recently I had the chance to go. This is not really a restaurant or food review. In this post I wish to to discuss safe sex and the methods we use to teach it.
Sex Is Amazing & Better When It Is Safe!
As I travel around the world I am always asking teenagers about how sex education is taught in schools. I am interested in this topic because I feel that the sex education I got in school was woefully inadequate. I was lucky to have a mother who who never made a taboo about the discussion of sex.
Sadly it seems that the standards of education have not improved much in the west and in some parts of the developing world they are almost mediaeval.
Like most of us I know how wonderful sex can be but I believe it does not need to lead to disease transmission or unwanted teenage pregnancies. This is just my personal view.
My Approach To Teaching Sexual Health To Teenagers
I believe effective sex education begins with removing any taboos around the discussion of sex. When I discuss sexual health with teenagers I always bring boxes of condoms to make air balloons, then water balloons with them.
This helps to evaporate any embarrassment through laughter and segues nicely into a wider discussion of reproduction, sexual health and positive human relationships.
Open Discussion For A Healthier Society
Some of you may know that through my life experiences I am very sceptical of charitable organisations and activities. Some are amazing but I know many organisations which are no more than scams to make money.
I have not researched the integrity of the Cabbages & Condoms restaurant in Bangkok and what they do and am not making any comment. However I applaud their approach of using condoms as the theme of their decor as this helps dissolve social barriers.
Condoms Are Great For Decoration & Great For Conversation! 😉
To give you a quick flavour of how cool condoms can be for interior decor I have included a few images of the Condoms & Cabbages decor. I think we should have free and open discussion about sex and how to make it wonderful yet safe.
Having condoms used as interesting design pieces helps to break taboos and stimulate important discussion about safe sex and improve harm reduction.
