Wade In the Water

The pine pollen is falling here in North Eastern Jefferson County, Alabama. Little buds are breaking through the fallen leaves on the forest floor. Cool crisp mornings and sunny afternoons breezy enough to turn the heat off and roll the windows down are here. The weather has finally cleared up after torrential rain for the last few weeks. The feeling of Spring is in the air. This feeling always leads me to the river.

Floating quietly through forest is one of my favorite things to do. Breathing and listening to the sound of the water as it steady makes its way South. The birds call and signal to one another about your visit. After a while, it's easy to zone out and become one with all of nature as it passes.

Next week, we will be going out to plant trees along the bank to protect the river banks from further erosion. Each Spring we at the Cahaba Riverkeeper do this. Impervious surfaces such as parking lots, rooftops, further building projects, etc. send more and more water into the river faster eroding the banks endangering and destroying the habitats of dozens of protected species.

Protecting our rivers and water resources has given me purpos. God knows the river has protected me!
