Now, comes the time that Starr must hold on to not just her guilt and trauma, but also with her classmates, who try avoiding Starr or others who are saying that the officer was right in shooting Khalil and that he did a favor to the society by killing a drug dealer. She tries to hide from everyone, including her boyfriend Chris, until the truth finally comes out & she comes to know which people to be with & which to lose, who all will help her & who will leave her, in the long run.
One of Starr’s father's friend, King, who is also a gangster, keeps troubling Starr & her family & puts their life in danger. Starr’s mother, Lisa keeps having a fight with her hubby, she is adamant about leaving the house/ country, whatsoever., while her hubby is not quite keen on this, but Lisa, keeps urging him to do, so, she says the safety of her family is a priority.
Finally, after many arguments, fights & everything else, they finally move to the suburbs. But one of Starr’s brothers Seven who is living with Kenya & King is unable to decide, so s to whom to live with, wishes to protect his sisters & mother & also wishes to attend college outside the city.
The novel is filled with all the more tensions when the jury is divided between whether to arrest or not the officer, who killed Khalil. When the jury fails to charge him, the city gets filled by protests, riots, with all this & more happening around, the novel finally ends with Starr making a promise that she won’t let this fight for justice die & that she will continue fighting, till her last breath.
