Wyndham City has elected Cr Mia Shaw as Mayor, 101 years after her Great Grandfather, William Shaw was elected Shire President for the first time.

Cr Shaw joined the Council in 2016, representing the Iramoo Ward, and she has held the Family Friendly City portfolio since.

The Mayoral Election was held on Wednesday, 28 November with Cr John Gibbons also elected as Deputy Mayor.

Cr Shaw said she was proud to be able to represent her community as Mayor.

“My family has been a part of the Wyndham community for many generations. My Great Grandfather William Shaw was elected Shire President three times between 1917 and 1946, with Shaws Rd and Shaws Rd Bridge named after him, so I feel great sense of pride and obligation in taking on this position,” Cr Shaw said.

“I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and guidance that has led me to this point. I would also like to give a special mention to my wonderful son Gus, who has been a constant source of inspiration as I’ve worked to provide him and other children with a bright future.”

She said she was proud to be able to pass Wyndham’s Family Friendly Charter. “Not only was this a first for our City, it is also believed to be the first of its kind in Victoria.”

She said the Charter recognises the economic and social contributions of the care families provide, acknowledges the value families add to developing and delivering services, infrastructure and policies affecting their lives and sets out how Council can ensure the decisions made inclusive and mindful of the life-cycle needs of local families.

“Many months of work went into this initiative. During this time one of the key things I learned is that people define what family is in so many different ways. There is no typical example of a family. I will take this with me as I work to represent every Wyndham resident as Mayor,” she said. Ms Shaw thanked her fellow Councillors as well as congratulated Cr Gibbons on his election as Deputy Mayor and thanked outgoing Mayor Cr Peter Maynard for his outstanding contribution to the community.
