Oceans Plastic Free in Years instead of Millennia: Is This Possible?

in theoceancleanup •  8 years ago  (edited)

We are polluting the oceans more and more with plastics waste. Waste that kills animals such like birds and fish. Waste that we get onto our dinner plates when we eat. Everyday more plastics are deposited into our oceans.

Can we stop this trend ?

Can we clean it up ?

The Ocean Cleanup Foundation thinks it can !!

In 2013 the Ocean Cleanup foundation was established by Boyan Slat to find a solution to clean up our ocean waters, to remove all the plastic material, from the large pieces till the very small pieces, not bigger than a dime (and even smaller).

There are 5 major plastic accumulation zones in the world where ocean  currents converge. These accumulation zones are commonly called "garbage  patches". The vast majority of ocean plastic will not go away by itself  but instead slowly break down into microplastics. After a year of  experimenting with ideas and simple tests, Boyan came up with the idea  to develop a passive concentration system. He envisioned to use the  ocean currents to his advantage, and let them be the driving force  behind catching and concentrating the plastic. Instead of going after  the plastic, you could let the plastic come to you.

Starting with a budget of 300 Euro, and a lot of energy and persistence, Boyan brought his initial ideas to reality. From an extensive feasibility study, followed by simulation studies, the design of the cleanup system, small scale tests, thorough analyses and mapping of the plastic patches in our oceans; The Foundation announced yesterday it was able to raise 21.7 M$ in funds. Now large scale tests of its passive plastic capturing technology can start.

The Pacific Ocean, plagued by the Texas-sized Great Pacific Garbage Patch, desperately needs to be cleaned up. The Ocean Cleanup is ready to tackle the problem with their plastic gathering technology tested in the North Sea thanks to new funding amounting to $21.7 million. Investors include Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Benioff and entrepreneur Peter Thiel.

Founder and CEO Boyan Slat said in a statement, “Our mission is to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, and this support is a major leap forward towards achieving this goal. Thanks to the generous support of these funders, the day we’ll be returning that first batch of plastic to shore is now in sight.”

The Ocean Cleanup’s technology could reduce the theoretical cleanup time of plastic in the Pacific Ocean from millennia down to years. It is expected that at least half of the plastic out in the oceans can be collected in just 10 years.

The Ocean Cleanup: How it Began...

The Ocean Cleanup: How they Roll...

This Thursday May 11th, The Ocean Cleanup foundation will further announce their plans.

I do hope, too, that our oceans can be zero plastic in the future. This is a very interesting post. Thank you @edje.
I've also watched another invention that helps clean our seas called the sea bin. It's a little smaller than the ocean clean up's project, though.

Thank you for reading and sharing the plastic bin. I actually know that initiative/product as well. Very interesting how people come up with these type of inventions. The bin is for smaller scale but could keep lakes and canals clean. Change the yellow top into water colour and it is kind of hidden for the human eye and it'll do great I think.

Exactly. I will be very glad if communities would adapt this inventions and hopefully, people would stop littering and practice ClayGo and the Leave No Trace Principles so we won't need these products anymore for cleaning the environment may it be in land or in water.

hopefully, people would stop littering

Agree, but I think the hope part can only become real when Singapore style fines are introduced": 1K+ $ for throwing chewing-gum or something small in the street.

GREAT to see articles like this on Steemit. I can't believe some of the images we have been seeing of plastic in both the water and water creatures. So it was wonderful to read about the The Ocean Cleanup Foundation. Have visited their site now and will donate.

So sad that it has to take people parting with their 'money' rather than a shift of social and environmental consciousness to stop people from littering. Also that plastic bags etc are still in use! 🙏 🙏 🙏

Our culture is indeed quite bad. At least in my country plastic bags are not allowed to be given away anymore by retailers, supermarkets, markets etc. We have to pay for them. We also started to collect plastic waste separate from the rest. Local government such as Amsterdam are working towards zero waste and CO2 neutral events (outdoor concerts, festivals, Kingsday, Gayparade etc) in the city by 2020.

A very good development. Plastic is a serious problem for earth and mankind. They even found tiny plastic parts in plankton. These tiny parts end up in our bodies eventually.

Most of the fish can bring the plastics onto our plates indeed. Plankton, wow, also those little ones! Yesterdays annoucement of The Ocean Cleanup foundation is "This design improvement also increases the efficiency of the system; we estimate to be able to remove half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in just 5 years." https://www.theoceancleanup.com/updates/show/item/pacific-cleanup-set-to-start-in-2018/ and

Thanks for sharing; Interesting article!
Apparently all big plastic will end up being that small, becomes micro-plastics. The start will be made to take the big pieces out of the ocean's so this can never degrade to the micro plastics anymore. But I suppose, for years to come we will get some of the ocean's plastics in our own body. But at least we are working on the cleaning side of things. At the same time we have to work on the cause side of things; But this is very difficult, since open waters are under no real control by anybody in the world, hence people do whatever they please.

Great article and inspiring news! Thanks! Curious to find out what their further plans will be.

I think they will announce the trial they are planning and in how short a time they expect to be able to clean the oceans. I mentioned 10 years for half the plastic in my article, but the CEO mentioned in a interview on TV, it'll be before he turns 30 years old; I think he is now 24 years. But lets see indeed what Thursday will be announced :)

This intrigues me because I know plastic can be sold to recycling centers. Maybe is cheaper for them to just get rid of it. Anyway, most likely some species will develop recycling capabilities and then we'll have to sustain pollution to conserve those species. hehe

In Italy around Naples waste, including all the plastics, are put into caves, as well as it is mixed with concrete used to build new buildings/constructions. In the past (80s/90s) the recycle waste in Germany was transported to eastern part of Germany to end up on big piles of waste, unprocessed. I guess, deposit waste like that is more economical then actually recycling since this cost money.

Anyway, most likely some species will develop recycling capabilities and then we'll have to sustain pollution to conserve those species. hehe

LOL

I hope it's a slow breakdown plastic :)

Well, it is waste with toxix chemicals in it. This is now in buildings. Can you imagine what this may do to the health of the people living/working in such buildings? The mafia is behind all of this, and they have only money in mind.

Good point, though I was thinking at the structure resistance.

:)

Better clean the ocean soon or we'll have plastic sushi.

Agree...this is not what we want...

Much needed discussion and call for action, am sceptic though

You do not believe this solution could work?

i wish it would

Oh, I think this is VERY real! It is not all that difficult, int he sense that it is just filtering the water. The challenge is in the magnitude of it. The Ocean Cleanup intents to put fields of many square kilometers out in the oceans and let the current do its work. The next step is to trial these big 'fields'.

Wow! You are throwing those great articles left and right now. Fantastic work you do since you started. Your researches are very interesting and awesome topics. My friend has ocean.care program in Indonesia I might introduce soon .

Thank YOU!
