The Book of Proverbs as a sapiential book teaches men to look for those goods that once acquired cannot be lost. And wisdom, along with the other spiritual gifts, like mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) and righteousness, are those goods that do not depend on the personal situation; the spiritual goods, once developed in the heart, beautify the soul of man and improve the social environment.
Wisdom as a science seeks the fulfillment, the happiness, and the success for man, but if men give their desire to the apparent goods such as wealth, happiness will become a fleeting emotion and beatitude will become an unattainable goal. Wisdom seeks for man to find the truth behind appearances; for this reason, the Book of Proverbs leaves men with a wise thought: "For riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations" Proverbs 27:24.
And that this phrase from Proverbs is true is demonstrated by countless stories in the Bible. Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab of Israel, was a sinful, Baal-worshipping woman who committed crimes to enrich herself. This woman suffered a tragic death due to Jehu's ambition to be crowned king of Israel. Her social position, nor his great palace, were useful to Jezebel; as this queen lived, so she died.
Man must not live as a fool but as a sensible man, no one is immune to the ethical laws of the universe, this is one of the deepest reflections in the Book of Proverbs. Furthermore, the Book of Proverbs instructs men in the knowledge of the wheel of destiny, just as it raises some also lowers others; men can never know the twists and turns of life. For all this, trusting excessively in wealth and power becomes excessively risky and the Bible invites men to meditate on this.
