TIL that "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" had the 2nd largest December weekend of all time!

in til •  8 years ago

There have been a lot of great films released around Christmas time. You may recall some of the real heavyweights like; Avatar, all of the Hobbit Movies, all of the Lord of the Rings movies, I am Legend, Chronicles of Narnia, and the previous Star Wars films...

Well, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" has passed them all. It recorded the second highest December box office total for a weekend ever over the December 16th weekend. The only movie to ever have a better weekend than this little beauty had, was the previous Star Wars film, released almost exactly one year prior on the same December weekend; "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens".

Perhaps there is something to be said for releasing a film the weekend before Christmas... ;)

"Rogue One" did over $155 million for those 3 days, which for comparison sake, was more than double what Avatar did during the same weekend several years prior. Avatar is a good measuring stick as it is the highest grossing film of all time.

To date, "Rogue One" has done close to $450 million worldwide in ticket sales.

How does that stack up against some of the other major heavyweights of all time? Lets take a look...

Top 10 Highest Grossing Films of all time:

1. Avatar: $2.8 billion

2. Titanic: $2.2 billion

3. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens: $2.1 billion

4. Jurassic World: $1.7 billion

5. The Avengers: $1.5 billion

6. Furious 7: $1.5 billion

7. Avengers: Age of Ultron: $1.4 billion

8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II: $1.3 billion

9. Frozen: $1.3 billion

10. Iron Man 3: $1.2 billion

202. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: $450 million

As you can see "Rogue One" is pretty far down the list, but when DVD sales, Redbox, and Netflix sales start to be factored in, you can bet that this one will jump all the way up near the Top 10. Will "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" end up being the highest grossing film of all time when things are said and done? We shall see...

For an even better comparison, lets take a look at the Top 10 all time Highest Grossing Films in the domestic market adjusted for inflation:

1. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope: $1.4 billion

2. Titanic: $1.1 billion

3. ET: The Extra-Terrestrial: $1.1 billion

4. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens: $900 million

5. Avatar: $800 million

6. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back: $800 million

7. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi: $800 million

8. The Lion King: $800 million

9. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace: $800 million

10. Jurassic Park: $800 million

271. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: $450 million

Keep in mind that this list only takes into account domestic sales adjusted for inflation. When looking at world wide adjusted for inflation, the order and the inclusions might be dramatically different.

As you can see, there are quite a few Star Wars films on that list. Will "Rogue One" eventually join those others upon this list? As of data that just came out minutes ago from this weekend's sales, "Rogue One" has actually jumped up to $525 million in worldwide ticket sales... well on it's way!

When looking at the above list there is one film in particular that stands out to me, one film that is not like the rest. Here's a hint:

Can you guess which film I am talking about? ;)

Haha that one is up there as well!

Nice comparaison article, loving the data! thanks and have a great day. Namaste :)

thank you for reading :)

Interesting statistics! I have not seen the new Star Wars movie yet, so I can't really chime in on if it deserves a top spot, but it seems that the top lists gets broken every year. Whoever said cinema was on its way out was clearly wrong.

Seriously! It has made a huge comeback over the last couple years!

Yep, and I really think that is a good thing. Many movies are so much better to experience on the big screen instead of at home. Luckily, 3D movies are starting to fade away :)

Haha yea I hate wearing those glasses...

But yes, Star Wars is the kind of film that enhances the experience much more by seeing it in the theater.

The sites you have referred were good. This is a great article, that I really enjoyed reading. Thanks for sharing. Post is explained clearly so that we are able to understand it clearly. http://appsforsys.com/pokemon-go-game-apk-download-android/
