Partial knee replacement: The surgeon which perform to replaces the damaged portions of the knee with plastic and metal parts.
Total knee replacement (TKR): In this procedure, the knee is replaced with an artificial joint. It requires a major surgery and hospitalization.
How is the candidate for TKR: - Patients with severe destruction of the knee joint associated with progressive pain and impaired function maybe candidates for total knee replacement.
A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure whereby the unhealthy knee joint is replaced with artificial material (plastic and metal). The knee is a joint (Hinge joint) which provides motion at the point where the thigh meets the lower leg. During a total knee replacement, the end of the thing bone is removed and replaced with a metal shell. The end of the lower leg bone is also removed and replaced with a channeled plastic piece with a metal stem. Depending on the condition of the kneecap portion of the knee joint, a plastic "button" may also be added under the kneecap surface.
My Father recently went though the TKR surgery he is 62 year old now. He was sufferning form join pain and has difficulty in walking. He was not able to walk even for 15 min or if he has to stand for 15-20 minutes he feel pain in the joints. We consult the doctor and he suggested for TKR.
Right now he is resting at home and as per doctor it will take three months for full recovery.
Physical therapy is an essential part of rehabilitation after total knee replacement.
The surgery takes approx three hours followed by the approx half an hour in recovery room. He was taken to the OT about 7.30 AM and the surgery was started by 8.00 AM and he was shifted again to the room by 12.30 PM.
On the first day after the surgery he does not feel any pain and it was normal but the moment the effect of anesthesia gone he was restless. He was not able to sleep in night. /Second day onward he was feeling pain but that can be bearable. He was hospitalize for six day.

I was surprise to see when on first day itself Doctor instructs him to stand on his feet (with the help of walker). And from second day morning they start the exercise, a physiotherapist used to come both time (in morning and evening).
On third day they ask my father if he can walk with the help of walker. It was good to see him walking (which give confidence to us also).
On fourth day they ask to walk without walker also.
On fifth day they exercise which include the stair climbing.
After discharge from hoospital we ask physiotherapist to come to our home to continue the exercise.
After the surgery my father feel pain for aprox 10 day (which happen usually as per the doctor), and the pain and swelling increase after he finish the exercise.
All the information above is from my personal experience and search.
