Crazy Tomato Lady!

I'm sad.

It SNOWED yesterday.
SNOW.
In mid September.
Not cool Mother Nature!

It's not that uncommon, but usually there's a little more warning!
This was the forecast an hour before those fluffy flakes started falling:

See anything about flurries or snow or frost?! I don't! Haha

There's a saying in Alberta, if you don't like the weather then go inside close the door, wait 5 minutes then open it and go back out! ;p

Since we are still in harvest mode here and trying to keep up with it all, there are plenty of things we just haven't done yet. We ended up having to dig our tomato plants just before dark yesterday evening and setting them up in our dining room!

The tomatoes are my other big gardening mistake of the year. I wanted to try planting them in the ground this year instead of starting indoors. I SUCK at hardening off plants, I either leave them too long in the sun to bake or I forget to bring them in and freeze them all night! Either way they die and I'm sad again.

Unfortunately I don't have a greenhouse so starting them outdoors meant having to wait until it was warm enough and I suppose there's just not quite enough time in our short growing season here.

So! Now I have a dining room of tomato plants! I set up a grow light for them and hopefully they produce lots more fruits for us :)

Klaus the cat is happy either way :)

I just got my first three tomatoes the other day... I'm hoping for more too! The plants have gotten big like yours but not as many blooms as other times I've triwd growing them. All in pots, though, on my balcony, so at least I can bring them in if need be!

Sorry to hear they're not producing! Has it been really hot maybe? I know that can cause that.
Since mine are indoors now I'll have to mimic what the pollinators would do outside by giving the flowers a little jostle every now and then haha

Sorry about the snow, the plants look GREAT inside though, I hope they yield a lot more for you guys!

Thanks! They're saying we might get snow again today, oh well, it's gotta come sometime I suppose! LoL

Nooooooooo still way too early :( :(

It's brutal! No more today at least although it was a possibility according to the forecast!
I hope you guys get a good autumn out of it! :)

Thank you :) xo It's usually pretty mild here on the South Shore until the mid to end of January <3 <3

That's awesome. I've been looking into the possibility of moving to NS again lately.. we have been planning a big move for years but can't quite decide where! LoL
It's always been between NS, NL or Vancouver island :)

Tough choice because they're all beautiful places!!

So true! They all have different benefits and drawbacks.. hard to choose! LoL

Taking them inside was a clever move! I started mine early and I did put some of them in a raised bed, they never got as big as yours! I will go with pots for them if I want to try some outdoors next year.
I have a greenhouse but I have trouble getting tomatoes to ripe before the season is over, so I bought some early varieties. I did get one that was quicker than the others, but it wasn't the early. It was a heirloom, marmande. I already closed down my greenhouse and now I have a lot of green tomatoes on the kitchen counter instead.

Glad you got a good haul out of it! Isn't it a little sad we have to stop in mid September? LoL Seems unfair!
I'm making plans to build a small lean-to greenhouse for next year, hopefully then I can make growing tomatoes a bit easier :)
We had tomatoes at home as well as at our out of town garden, the out of towners were about to get hit with frost so we picked them all, now we're eating them one by one as they ripen! LoL

  1. Let's trade climates? I want snow so badly over here in San Diego, CA!
  2. You will probably need stronger lighting to get fruiting from your tomatoes. Especially for tomatoes as they require a ton of light during fruiting phase. If anything, just put the light MUCH closer. The inverse square law of light means the closer you put it, the better :)

Oh man I would trade so fast!
I might actually appreciate the snow then! Haha

I was wondering on the light and had said we probably need a couple more bulbs! I'll have to get to the hardware store later today and pick up some!
Thanks so much for the advice! :)
