What is Steem?
Steem is a blockchain-based social media platform where anyone can earn rewards by sharing quality content. The reward payout model is built upon a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus algorithm and its value token is called STEEM. In order to provide high availability and reliability, Steem’s blockchain has been built using Graphene technology, which was first developed for BitShares 2.0 in 2014. In 2017, Steem released Smart Media Tokens (SMTs), allowing developers to create tokens on top of Steem’s blockchain. SMTs are similar to ERC20 tokens that run on Ethereum; they are transferable across blockchains and represent ownership in specific applications or businesses.
The History of Steem
In 2016, BitShares AG announced a new blockchain project named Steem with a white paper written by Daniel Larimer, a co-founder of both BitShares and STEEM. The idea was to create a website where users could earn cryptocurrency rewards based on posting content that appeals to other people. The resulting system is called Steemit, and it has been functioning as intended since July 4th, 2016. At first, one of three witnesses had to post an entry for a user's post to count.
