Cayos Cochinos, Honduras

The Hog Islands or Cayos Cochinos are a group of 2 small volcanic islands, Cayo Grande and Cayo Menor and 13 small coral cays located about 20 miles from La Ceiba in Honduras, the complete area is about 2 square miles. They have a population of about 100 most of them African descendants who are called Garifunas, they have their own language although of course they speak Spanish and many of them also get along in English, they also have their own cuisine dances and traditions. The whole site is a Marine Protected area and is kept very clean and environmentally is quite unpoluted. It is part of the Caribbean Barrier Reef so diving here is spectacular. The local wildlife includes the Rosy Boa constrictor, Jamo a type of Iguana, also a variety of birds and turtles, so if you like wildlife you will certainly enjoy these cays.

There are tours (by boat of course) from La Ceiba and also from Roatan. You will be able to find lodgings if you plan to stay for more than a day, don’t expect a five star hotel, but the places are comfortable enough.

These cays are really beautiful, are basically unspoiled and I would highly recommend a visit even if it’s only for the day, I am sure you will enjoy it.You can find tour operators on the internet, where you can find more information about this amazing place.
