A lot of the ultra-woke crowd rejects the idea that actors should not be allowed to play characters that they don't represent in real life... Including some who believe straight people shouldn't play gay characters.
But here we have a situation where, if we take Ellen Page at her (now his) word that he is Elliott Page and identifies as a man, then he is a straight man playing a lesbian woman in Umbrella Academy.
So should that be allowed under woke logic?
My answer to this is, and has always been, that if the actor can effectively play the role and it works for the story, then who cares. The best stories are not going to be the ones where the filmmakers are so focused on checking the right boxes that they don't do what's actually good for the show. So if Umbrella Academy continues, then no worries. Carry on. Ellen did a great job as Vanya before. Elliott Page is the same person... So no reason to think that will be any different.
But it should expose a lot of underlying irrationality here. And not only in terms of the stupidity of policing actors portraying different characters, which under consistent principles should happen here with Page.
Another really obvious issue is one I've certainly talked about before, which is that you ultimately cannot square the idea that genders are infinitely fluid and that anybody can be whatever they want, and that there are no meaningful differences between men and women and accept that a female can feel like a man. If there were no differences, then feeling like a man wouldn't mean anything. But of course, it does mean something to Page. It's obviously not enough to be aesthetically and physically androgynous, or to be sexually attracted to women, and still feel like a woman. Clearly there's a gendered difference being expressed here.
And that's generally true of all such transitions. The implication is always that there's an innate difference that the transgender person needs reconcile.
Whether or not you are supportive of this stuff or not, the logic of transgenderism is totally antithetical to other beliefs held by SJW activists simultaneously.
